The Dangers Of Allowing Phones In The Classroom
Phone is one of the biggest inventions of our time. It has breached a lot of gap in the society. I can't exhaust talking about the relief it has brought to education.
Back then, people need to go to the cafe whenever they want to carry out a research that involves the internet, sometimes after paying a huge amount of money for the task and on transportation one may end up not getting what they really wanted.
But today, phones has taken that stresss away, we can carry our research from home, spending just little amount of money to secure internet connection.
Students no longer need to buy a lot of books and go through so much stress in searching for any data. The internet has made it easy, one can just type what he/she wants on the browser and a variety of answers would be provided for him or her to select the one that best made sense.
Phones also enhance self learning in an advanced way through video, pictures and words, making it very easy for anyone to understand a topic on their own. Except a student is lazy, getting materials to study now isn't a big deal.
With all these advantages no one can deny the fact that phone is a plus to our generation and our education.
However, we must not cross the limits. As much as the phone is very important to students, it also has its boundaries. Yes, it makes learning easy but it has its jurisdiction.
I don't think the idea to allow the students carry phone to the school is right for whatsoever reason. Forget it that phone is an added advantage to the students, it can also become a big source of distraction.
I remember while I was in school secondary school some years back, one of my classmates brought a phone to school and while our teacher was stressing himself trying to pass knowledge to us, those guys were busy watching movie at the back seat.
I didn't know how the teacher caught them, he was very furious. He seized the phone and asked them questions on what he just finished explaining but the two of them couldn't give an answer. Don't you think worse than that could happen? Who knows the kind of movie they were even watching?
With AI available on phones, it's an open door to malpractice. No matter how disciplined a student is, being allowed to carry their phone to school can bring the temptation to do research when faced with difficult questions during examinations or tests.
In fact, even during lessons, I am sure when a teacher asks a question, the students will definitely use AI to get answers instead of using their brains to recall which will eventually sharpen their thinking capacity making them smart.
It will provide room for laziness and increase the rate of malpractice. A lot of students will begin to rely on their phones for learning instead of their brains. What the head ought to provide, the phone will take charge.
I am just imagining the kind of incompetent students that would be produced in the society. I heard recently that a general in the army went for a check up in a government hospital.
After explaining his situation to the doctor, to his shock, the young doctor took his laptop and in the patient's presence, he was carrying out research on what drugs he should prescribe for him.
The general played along and answered him whenever he asked questions and proceeded to search. After everything, when he wrote the name of the drugs and gave it to him.
He collected it and tore the paper. When the doctor tried to retaliate, he revealed himself to him and called their office immediately. The army came and shut the clinic for some days. I don't know what became of the doctor afterward.
I don't want to take sides but even if I was that general I won't take those drugs. No one is against research but doing it in the presence of your patient is terrible and makes you incompetent.
I fear if we support phones in the classroom, we may end up having more bad situations than that of the doctor I just talked about in society.
