Living in a small town is good for raising kids, there is less stress in your daily life compared to big cities. Less time of your life spent on your way to work, less chances of being a victim of urban violence, robbed, and other problems. However, for work, it can be a problem. I lived in a town where your experience and skills weren't considered a plus compared to who you were in a social context. In a small town, native people are known by their families, and big names in companies will always know someone from your family. Knowing people was more important that years of experience for example in a topic. How did I survive on that?

image.png

There were several examples where influence was a plus in what position you would get in a job. I wasn't a direct employee of the local hospital. I was hired by a different company that was working inside the hospital at that time. So I knew about everything that was happening in the corridors of the hospital. One example was when there was a vacancy in the pathologist position. Instead of opening an opening to many different experienced pathologists who were looking for a job, they mentioned that the nephew of the University director was finishing medical school with a pathology specialization in another city. So they waited a couple of months just to hire this specific person, just because he was known around. In another opening they needed a person specialized in gene editions for diseases, they would rather hire a local postdoctoral specialized in another area instead of a very experienced professional who had studied years on that but it was from out of town.

I was naive in thinking that with me it was going to be different, but I saw that it wouldn't when the husband of a medical doctor came back to town, after his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics. He started to work around before getting the doctorate diploma. He demanded a position of principal investigator, but they decided to calm him down and give him a postdoctoral position for a while until his course was finished. After a while, they created a position for a principal investigator in bioinformatics in the hospital. I applied of course but I wasn't even called for an interview. I had more history of skills and publications but I knew that this was going to be the result since someone told me that this position had already an owner. I applied just to see if maybe I still could have a chance.

If the story ended with just this story I would be happy, but it didn't. Since the company that I worked for had a gray connection with the hospital, it wasn't uncommon to see partnerships and hospital researchers interfering in our research. So my former colleague who now was a hospital investigator, continued to step on my department and it was so depressing to see him trying to boss me. When I complained to my supervisor he said that this was not correct to happen and I was right, but at the same time, he didn't do anything to change that. This event in addition of a bag of false promises that my work was going to be recognized made me start looking for other jobs, and for those reasons, I left this job.

I learned a lot in this situation, very closed small towns usually focus on giving chances to those who are known, even if that means less skill set and experience. This way they protect and keep their population employed. But for sure I am not a patient person to see people less qualified growing while me and others that deserve to grow, we don't.

It's always so sad when someone who has years of experience and effective skills being denied and the chance given to a less experience or inexperienced fellow all because of connections. It hurts but that is the situation everywhere where connection gives the upper hand than what you know.

I agree that what they call “networking” matters a lot sometimes, but in cases like that when where you are from matters is so frustrating!

This kind of situation is frustrating; it's a shame that people are valued for these aspects.

It is what it is… and you can find this problem in other companies there!

Small towns are all about the good old boys club, always has been, always will be. Bigger cities are nicer for work in many ways, but also less safe than the small town. That experience you had really sucked!

Yeah it happens… the pros and cons… But I would say that it is a good town to retire perhaps, but if you are going for a job probably unless they offer you a good opportunity from the beginning ( which could be rare but lets see possible) it is going to be hard to grow… not impossible again but it is harder

What's the problem with this? Why would a small town want to give away good jobs to transient workers and global citizens instead of to locals who spent their whole life there and would want to stay? It usually implies loyalty as they aren't likely to leave when a better opportunity comes up or they get bored of the area. Trust is also an important factor. It's arrogant to assume small towns should just hire the best candidate from a global talent pool and exclude their own who they grew up with and loved unemployed or force them out just because some random outsider is slightly better on paper because they may have had more previous external opportunities which weren't available to locals.

No offense to you, I'm talking in general.

I see the logic behind of what you said! And I also understand in hiring someone that it is local and have good references in loyalty for example. But it depends, I would still be living there if I had opportunity to grow there, even with lower salaries compared to other institutions in the country! It is a place with a good quality of life for a family! I found similar quality of life here where I am right now, and at least here I feel that there are more opportunities for outsiders even being a similar sized town.
