The issue of transportation is a serious matter in my country ever since the removal of fuel subsidy. Before this fuel subsidy saga we can take a bike for as ow as 50 naira but immediately after the removal it was from one brand of hike to another.
Imagine initially I take bike as low as 50 naira to my kids school but as it stands today it has increased to over 200 naira and there is no hope that it is going to be reduced. This is the current situation in my State. Just yesterday while I was gisting with my sister in-law she told me of how the governor of her state made buses available at a very subsided rate which has made transportation system not too expensive over there. Seriously, it is not easy for us here at all I don't know of those in other parts of the country.
Fuel is one thing that regulates the prices of other things in my country. The moment the cost is affected to the negative, the cost of other things is just affected. Do you you imagine that just beans that is sold at about 800 naira got to 2800 naira in just a question of days. You get to the market today and buys something from a vendor, then returns to the same day in just few days interval you will see that things have changed. Infact, the moment you hear your vendor, wait let me call the office, infact just start thinking of adding many amount to the formal.
Talking of the road network, it is so terrible. While discussing with some friends on Sunday it was a full doze of lamentation from all of them because of how the Eastern roads are just nothing to write home about. A journey that is supposed to take just 8 hours one will end up taking 20 hours and more because of the potholes and more. The bad boys have just used this as a means to rob people of their precious belongings .
Many have gone as far as getting a bicycle for themselves at least it doesn't need fuel
Now, what is the way forward someone may ask?
First is for those who have collected the contract for these roads to focus and carry out what they have been paid for.
Also, it is very important for me to do my best to gain access to mobility because that will help me reduce the amount of money I spend I transportation.
Even when I gain this mobility I will also reduce my going out to places because the cost of fuel has gone so high and as it is the government don't just have a way to regulate it at all. I don't even know what the government's intentions are because though removal of subsidy is nice but we can't just point to a particular tangible thing these money have been used for over this one year.
If my State government can also find a way of subsiding the cost of transportation to different parts of the State it will go a long way in reducing the amount people spend on transport system.
My humble submission for this weekends edition of the contest. Thank you so much for visiting my blog today
