A TASTE OF TOGETHERNESS

Growing up, maybe it was due to the fact that we lived in a one room apartment or it was just as it should be, my family mostly ate together in one place. We will all gather around one big bowl of eba and one plate of soup and dig in. Even when we visited grandma, we also saw the same practice there. In fact, at grandma’s place, it was even more serious there because you can’t eat if everyone is not complete yet, except that person was not coming back home that day.

Since I was a little girl, I have always enjoyed the idea and experience from g gathering round one table to eat with everyone. I guess I enjoyed it that way because I came to meet that practice at home but then, I also got to realized how much it made us stay connected even when we had conflicts. I mean, it would be very hard for you to keep malice with someone you eat with every day. You will always want to make peace with them because you don’t want bone to hook your throat, lol.

I remember the first time I visited a home where they all have different plates, it was so serious that everyone could identify to their plate. I was not so comfortable with it at first because it was just not fun and united, no one to shout at for eating the meat they shouldn’t have eaten or that person that always eat very fast leaving the rest to manage whatever they could help themselves with. Well, over time, I had to adjust to that way of life because just like me, this particular family have been use to eating separately for as long as they can remember.

For someone who was privileged to have both experiences, I always still appreciate eating with people in one plate than eating alone. But then, I don’t appreciate it when I have to wait for a long time for someone before I start eating. I noticed how the fact that we eat together made us bonded effortlessly. I can boldly and proudly say that, this is one reason why I’m so close with my siblings and my dad. It was only until few years ago my dad stopped eating with us and that was because he developed a bad habit of staying out late. But we never stopped.

When I get to build my own family in the future, eating together in one place would definitely be a thing because I know how beautifully it can affect the bond between people. In the other house I stayed at, I noticed how far apart they were from their dad and personally, I believe that won’t have been that way if they all ate together in one place, right from the very beginning. So, I want my children to be free with us the parents and I know eating together would be of great help.

Most families don’t see the need for this because they don’t all come back home the same time. Or maybe the father or both parents just feel too big to eat with their children which is quite understandable but I don’t appreciate it if the children also find it hard to eat together. I remember, there were even some times when my dad came back late and when it was time for him to eat, we will all still join him at the table and we will most times get meat or fish from him, hehe. And while he eats, we keep him company by either arguing about something or singing, hehe.

Thinking about it, I can remember just few times I wished we didn’t eat together and it was mostly because I was mad at someone or something or because I just wanted to be selfish. Besides that, we created more memories eating together and that was something beautiful and it is something I would also want my children to experience. I’m definitely not changing anything, instead, I’m going to improve on it to make it an habit my children would also love to pass on to their children.

Thank you for stopping by. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences too. I’m sure it was fun also eating with others, if not, share why it was not fun, hehe.

Hey there, evol.❤️
Growing up, we ate at the same time, but not from the same plate. My mom would always tell us about her childhood. Remember I told you she grew up with 9 siblings? They’d gather around a big pot of Eba and soup and dig in. They drank from the same big cup, too. It would have been nice if my siblings and I grew up this way, but my dad was totally against him. He had his reasons.

Now, I find it difficult to eat with people. My siblings are the closest people to me, and I didn’t even eat with them while growing up. Now, imagine me trying to eat with outsiders.

I wish I could go back in time to change this. Sadly, it is too late.

Yeah? Everyone doesn’t have to bond that way but it is actually really nice. I hope my children grow up that way.

Thanks for stopping by, love. ❤️

I think having dinner, lunch, and breakfast all are important for making the family bond strong. In my family, we still practice it. But when it comes to eating from the same bowl we also do it sometimes but I don't think it's good all the time because as individuals having different preferences about food is quite normal. In that case, eating food from a single bowl seems a good idea in my opinion. I think as long as we sit together and talk with each other while eating, it's enough for make the bond strong. But in that case, I think using mobile phones should be restricted as it's a threat and take attention of anyone.

It would be rude to use phone in such a gathering. That will encourage people to avoid using their phones while eating.

Thanks for your input, Intishar. 🥰

Growing up, I and my siblings also ate from the same plate; my dad made it compulsory. The boys eat together on one plate, and the same with the girls. I didn't like it then because whenever I went to my cousin's place, they all had their different plates, but now as an adult I have grown to appreciate what my dad did and am also planning to do the same with my kids.

I’m happy you had the experience while growing up, it was really nice and something that I feel everyone should experience.

Thanks for your input. 🤗

Welcome 🤗

when I have to wait for a long time for someone before I start eating

There is nothing as painful as this I must confess 😂
As someone who also grew up in a family that ate together, I will say it's really a great way of bonding together because it's basically those little memories that keep us growing in love.

Hehe, I’m glad you can relate. 😂

Yeah, but beside that, there are so many benefits of eating together as a family. 🥰

Eating together is very good for the family relationship and creating more bond, we also did same and I will continue the tradition.

I trust you will! It’s really nice!! 🤭

Family dinner indeed helps to strengthen family ties.

Awesome write-up 👏

I totally agree with you. 🥰

Thanks

You’re welcome. Thank you more for stopping by. 🥰

You are most welcomed

Eating together with family is one beautiful thing, it has a way of creating a very strong bond. I really miss those days

Yeah, I think most people have stopped this practice due to one reason or another.

Thanks for stopping by, dear.

We did a lot of eating together while growing up. Even now that we're grown men, thar hasn't changed.
Anyone who hasn't experienced it will not know how much fun and lovely the moment is. I'm definitely making sure thar it's a tradition in my own home.

Yeah, I actually feel for those persons who didn’t get the chance to eat together with their families in one place.

Thanks for your input. 😊

Growing up I, my siblings and parents always eat together and if one of us is not present we'd have to wait for that person. Despite the fact that I love waiting for us to be complete before eating but I still hate it if that person is back late especially if am hungry. Having dinner together with family always create a lasting bonds.

Yeah, I feel your pain, hehe. But like you said, it still always feels right in the end waiting for that person. 🥰

Thanks for your input, dear.
