It’s interesting how technology has helped us generate more food that can go around despite the overpopulation so many countries in the world are experiencing but then, we have a bigger problem but the good part is, there are still ways out of this problem. The aim of technology in agriculture and science is to bring about efficiency and sustainability and most importantly, quality to everything that it can be applied to but sadly, due to greed and absentmindedness, we keep on choosing quantity over quality.
We don’t want to even mention the consequences of what this has done to us but I’m very sure we all have had a taste of the effect of this greed and absentmindedness. Science and technology is something that has come to us to make our lives easier and better not the other way around. These days, most of the farmers that employ the use of technology and science keep reducing the quality of our edibles and they still make things really pricey. For those local farmers who are yet to even understand how technology and science works, they are the ones we disregard the most but thanks to them, we are still having the opportunity to eat some non adulterated foods.
The application of technology and science is a life changing opportunity for mankind but then, we are becoming more greedy and selfish by the day. We see that things are not going well but as long as we are not directly affected, we feel it is none of our business. Not all organic products are really organic these days. Some of them have undergone series of modifications to get to what they are today. Today we can see that there are so many different products of one kind of food with different prices on them. That alone is a clear indication that something is definitely wrong somewhere.
There are so many ways this defect can be corrected in the agricultural system. First thing is that, we should choose quality over quantity. This will be the hardest because, we feel that if we choose quality over quantity we won’t be able to survive for long but that is not true at all. Your body will appreciate a quality meal over its quantity but then, in your mind, you will keep thinking that if you don’t have more you might end up dying but that won’t happen. And besides, if we are able to discipline ourselves over time, we will be able to adjust in no time.
Those in charge of food and health should ensure that those who cultivate these products for our consumption are going through the right processes and not just trying to get their profits only. No matter how small or expensive it is to make an healthy product, they shouldn’t change its quality but it’s quantity instead. These days, sadly they change both the quality and quantity and it’s not the best thing for the masses because we are still going to buy it anyways. So, those who are professionals in knowing products that will be of value to us should make sure of that.
Natural control of pests should be encouraged over chemical controls. This might not yield as much profit as the latter but it will be beneficial to everyone in the long run. We can’t even begin to count the number of unknown illnesses that has occurred in the past years and most of these illnesses have been traced to the food we consume on a daily basis. Just because a company wants to make more profit, they tend to go for mass production and this can only be made possible thanks to pesticides and insecticides (at least to these farmers). These days, only those who farm at their backyards are the ones that mostly practice mixed farming, sadly.
Mixed farming/cropping should be encouraged as this is also a natural way of controlling pests and diseases that affect crops and livestock. And last but not least, people should be enlightened on the best ways to go about farming and agriculture in general to yield a sustainable and healthy ecosystem. We should be less concerned about profit and focus more on sustaining and improving lives. And this brings us back to choosing quality over quantity.
This is my response to the Hivelearners topic on ”TECHNOLOGY AND PROFITS”.
