Just yesterday, I was in a place where we had the teaching/discussion of what authority is and our roles towards any authority that be. No matter how unreasonable an approach to something might be, still take your time to think of what might be reasonable about it. As they say, in every nonsense, there is a sense in it. In a world like ours, most people live two lives and ideally, it is your lifestyle most companies are concerned about these days when they choose to have you as a worker except for those who work remotely.
As we all know, the social media is now a place so many people live their second lives which might either be their true live or the fake life but what matters is, they live a life there. And so many people have this general knowledge. I said that because, today, we see so many people living one life on the social media and another in real life which has raised so many questions in our minds. Interestingly, those who are employers also have access to these knowledge and the truth is, it’s only natural that they get curious of how you have lived your life to be a part of their company’s life.
Sometimes, they might choose not to accept you to work with them, while other times they might just advise you to make a change or quit if you can’t. An employer asking for an employee’s social media handle, for some, they will actually be happy because they might likely get an extra follower or more likes at least while for some, they will be scared because they know they have not done well on their social media platforms. Is it an invasion of your privacy? Hmm, I don’t think so because others can see what you post normally and that’s because it is what you wanted so I really don’t see how that is an invasion of your privacy.
The only time it will be an invasion of your privacy is if you have set your social media accounts that way. And if that is how it is set, then, that might also be a problem to some employers because it will get them more curious to know why your life is set as private to some and not to some. The truth is, as long as any of your information is on the social media space, whether set as private or not, it means you want eyes to see it and that means you have given anyone an access to see it.
Personally, I won’t mind handling my social media handle to my employer if that’s what they want. This is so because I have deprived myself of doing so many things that would have brought fun to me. If not, I would have found it hard at some point because I know that I have done some things that might not paint a good image of me to my employer. And if I was someone that loses a job because of the things I have posted on social media, naturally that will make me want to quit doing those things and eventually make me a better person.
There might be an ulterior motive of my employer asking for my social media handle but then, I will prefer to look at it on the positive side that he or she just wants me to live well especially now that I will be working with him or her. Just imagine that the image I portray online was the same as the one offline, the truth is I’d be getting that job that instant. But if not, I will be praying so hard and making promises of changing if I even get that job. Just by my employer asking for my social media handle, whether or not they go through it, that alone will make me to be more conscious about the things I share moving forward.
Like I mentioned when I started, I remembered what was thought yesterday and that is because sometimes, as humans, we always see that authorities are witch hunting us when they make some demands but the truth is, if these authorities were not in place, so many people would have being doing things how they like it and that won’t be good for anyone, not even the person doing as he or she pleases. So for me, when authorities make rules and regulations, I just make sure they are right in the sight of God and not necessarily my sight because I know that sometimes some things might seem good to me but in the actual sense it is not ideal.
Thanks for reading through. ❤️
