A HEARTFELT OPINION

in #hive-153850last month

I'm a football lover, although not a die hard lover, but a very decent one. Right at this moment I have quite a number of things to say regarding hive learner’s prompt for week 140 edition 1, but I don't even know where to begin. I'm finding it difficult trying to navigate talking about what I think about sports and the dangers they can pose without being biased as a lover of sports. For those who don't really do sports, or watch it, it's easy to say it's dangerous but for we who love sports, it becomes as though we love the danger they pose, or don't care about it or worse case scenario try to defend why we think it's okay for people to get injured playing games when there are games they can play without getting injured.

When I think about all these things, I like to think about the new editions of cars that come out every year, and people go all out for them despite the number of road accidents we have. Or should I mention the cases of ships capsizing and Air crashes we hear about. Yet it's some people's dreams to fly or sail. Now we are entering an era of self-driving cars that poses potential risk of AI malfunctioning while in motion, yet a lot of people are enthusiastic about it. This thought brings me to the conclusion that there is no life, without risk. There's no life, without something to elevate the adrenaline in your body, there's no life without something to keep you at your very best and make you do things the world never thought possible.

What if you get injured or worse case scenario die in the process of doing what makes you happy, would it be worth it or not. This makes me remember the late pro wrestler Eddie Guerrero of blessed memories who died of heart failure, he had a heart condition and yet was fighting as a pro wrestler and would showcase a lot of dangerous stunts during his time. An athlete like Roman Reigns battles leukemia and yet fights in the ring frequently and even went almost 3 years as world champion. This is him doing what he loves not for the money alone but for the joy it gives both him and his fans. There are athletes who would have never amounted to anything in life if sports wasn't a thing, so considering injuries as some sort of issue for me is not relevant.

I say it's not relevant because life itself is dangerous and poses threats that are capable of taking lives any second, so why deny people from doing what they love because of something that can never be prevented. So far so good, sport bodies put things in check for athletes in order to prevent injuries and even deaths to the bare minimum and at the same time make the sport enjoyable for both the athletes and the fans. For boxers and wrestlers, they tell you not to copy what you see them do because they have been trained for it, and their bodies can tolerate any unforeseen outcome from it. The rules the fighting bodies put in place are so strict that the athletes can't engage in the act outside the ring else they lose their rights to fight at all. This shows discipline and professionalism and should be encouraged regardless of the fear of injuries.
