Greetings!
I'm not someone who gets overly involved in politics. I could meet a group of friends discussing political issues, and I wouldn’t even utter a word to contribute. I just take politics as something that can never be entirely right, no matter what. Even though I’m not interested in political discussions, there’s a moment, an event in the past, that made me feel genuinely bad about the political happenings in the country. Each time I remember it, I just wish I had the power to change things, even if it meant doing so in ways that might not be conventional. Lol.
I think, in some way, citizens in this country are influenced by voodoo or magic when it comes to election time. How else can you explain a citizen coming out to campaign for and vote for a candidate who might have directly or indirectly caused the death of their loved ones? It sounds strange, right? Okay, let me explain further.
Some years back, exactly in the year 2020, there was a genocide in the country against protesters. It was a massive tragedy. That year was close to an election year, and during that period, everyone vowed never to vote for the people involved in ordering soldiers to kill those protesters. Truthfully, 99% of Nigerians were angry and passionately declared that they would never vote for that set of politicians.
However, the day I wished I could walk back and correct wasn’t the day the genocide happened. No, it was during the election season. Why?
Oh boy, during the election season, especially the campaign period, a significant number of Nigerians—who I genuinely think were under some form of voodoo influence—were actively campaigning for these same politicians. It left me wondering how people could so easily forget the past, forget the pain these politicians caused, and start singing their praises. How could they do that if not for some form of magical influence?
If I could go back in time and had the power, maybe even superpowers, there’s nothing I would want to do more than to stop those politicians during the campaign season, even if it meant killing them to ensure they never got close to the positions they hold today. The funny thing is that all those politicians we detested so much during that period ended up winning their elections. I’m not saying they weren’t politically qualified for their positions—although, judging by the current state of the country, some clearly aren’t—but just for the fact that they showed no regard for the lives of their citizens, they did not deserve to win any election. Their victories should have been a lesson to others never to trample on the lives of their citizens.
Another thing I would do, if I could go back in time and change things, is to take away the thinking capacity of those who campaigned for those politicians, yes, I mean removing their brain forever. I don’t know what that would mean for the future, but for the sole reason that they failed to use their brains during that time, it’s clear their reasoning was flawed.
Am I digging too deep? Well, if you’re a Nigerian reading this and you fall into this category, you know what would happen if I had the power to go back in time and change things. It would serve as a lesson to everyone to use their brains properly to discern what is good and what is bad.
Unless maybe they were truly under voodoo influence.
Thanks for reading.
