"Small acts of kindness create lasting impacts."
This is a publication based on the suggested topic proposed in the Hive Learners community through their discord, which on this occasion is "Volunteering And Community Work".
Welcome to my blog and to another interesting topic today. We will be talking about volunteering and community work. When we talk about volunteering, the word says it all: it is something that comes from the heart, from the desire to contribute and do something for the community or the place where a person lives. Here in Venezuela, there are many volunteer organizations. The ones I know generally come from religious initiatives or religious groups. I remember many years ago, when I was a member of the Mormon Church, we would go with the youth group to different nursing homes where these people, who are often left aside by their parents—sorry, by their children, by their relatives—these elderly people would welcome us with great joy because the work we did was simply talking to them, as they usually did not receive visits from their loved ones. Their loved ones would leave them alone in these nursing homes and did not visit them. So, they would receive visits from religious groups, and we would go to talk to the elderly. I would sit down—I remember it very well—with different elderly women who would hold my hand and ask if I was their son. Then I would talk to them, explaining that I was not their son, but that I was part of a religious group that came to spend time with them. And well, we would sing songs for them. There was a friend who always came with us and brought a guitar, and with the guitar, we would brighten the afternoons of the elderly men and women who were there. This was something they greatly appreciated because you could see how happy they became, how they remembered songs from their time, and they would ask us to play songs from their era. And well, every Saturday, every other Saturday, we would go to help and do this volunteer work at these nursing homes. I am sure this made a difference in the lives of these elderly people because they felt they were not alone, that they were loved, and that they had someone who cared for them, that they were still important to someone. This was one of the things I did for the community many years ago. What I learned from this experience is how important it is, as an older adult, not to feel alone; to put yourself in the shoes of this elderly person when, in a few years, each of us reaches that stage. To have a clean heart and conscience, knowing that we have helped and contributed to ensuring that an elderly person or several elderly people do not feel alone, by accompanying them. So, I believe it is very important to think about the future and to have this feeling must have contributed, because we will all one day be older adults, and we may find ourselves in a situation where we have no family, where we have no one, and we will not want to feel alone. We will need that friendly voice, that person, that helping hand who will visit you, who will be there talking to you; so that you do not feel abandoned in the world and left alone in the world. And so that you feel that the community for which you worked, for which you did things, still remembers you. You have your legacy there in that way, and you receive that reward of warm hugs, of people who sing to you, of people who accompany you. I believe that is a very important value and a fundamental value in this life for any human being, because we all have the right to enjoy that.
