Shouldn’t love be enough? This is one question we the youth of today need to as ourselves over and over again in our relationships and even towards our marriages. I haven’t lived very long on earth but from my twenty something years on earth, I have seen love and I have also seen love.
I have seen the kind of love between the generations before us and I have seen the love in our generation and believe me, the differences are clear. First off, most of our parents didn’t have much but still got married and have lived together up until today. They grew together and enjoyed the fruits of their labour together. No relationship is perfect but our elders always found a way to make things work for the sake of the family. This is what we call love.
Today, we the gen Z’s and what have you have changed the whole definition of love. One thing I mostly hear around and I even say myself sometimes is, what is a poor man doing around love. In a way it’s true, what’s a poor man’s business with love. But looking at it from the side of our generation, love today is all about money and what one can give the other. The whole essence of love is to learn, grow and build something together but I believe our generation took the whole thing the wrong way.
Guys know what they want and ladies also know what they want. It’s no more about love now, it’s more like a transactional business and that’s the reality. Just a few days ago, a friend and I were talking about the high rate of HIV in some parts of Ghana and the shock of it was that kids between the ages of 14-17 were positive for adenovirus. Sad, but that’s the situation we find ourselves in today. I sat there asking myself what a kid of 14 years would have to do with multiple sex partners. And it’s more like a cycle in the community. So in a situation like this, everyone in the community with multiple sex partners would likely be positive for the virus.
Now that we have established that love in our generation is diverted towards a different thing and not actual love, tell me why signing a prenuptial agreement isn’t the way to go? Not to even go far, let’s take a look at the story of the footballer Hakimi. From what I could deduce from the stories, his wife only agreed to marry him because her plan was to divorce him and get half , if not more of his properties. Something he has worked his entire life for. His whole marriage was a farce or even a scam if I should call it. We have become so corrupt that we even try to deceive people that we love them just to take from them. We really need to do better.
In as much as there are so many negatives to love in todays world, good and genuine people still exist. But how do you we know? You can never know until you try. And so, to be on the safer side, once you feel your partner is being a bit funny, do make sure to sign a prenuptial agreement before marriage. I mean, if they don’t have any bad intentions it shouldn’t really be a big deal for them. I believe this topic is quite subjective but this is my take.
