The Future of Internet Access: A Human Right Perspective

in #hive-15385017 days ago

In the olden days, our parents didn’t have access to the kind of technology we have today. To even speak to someone, you’d have to spend days and even weeks to get your message delivered. But before computers even came about for our forefathers to send messages which lasted ages to be received , they resorted to the use of letters which where transported by birds or even travelers who were to pass where the letter was to be received.

Today, it’s a different story. We have phones , laptops and other gadgets which work with the speed of light. You can sit at the comfort of your and send messages to anyone in any part of the world. But, we didn’t just get here in a blink of an eye. It took years of research , testing and improvement. We have the technology now which is good, but what is a phone without internet connectivity?

Internet connectivity has also improved so much over the years. Those days, you’d have to click a tree to be able to place a simple call. If you’ve seen the honey chuchi chuchi advert from MTN, you’d know what I’m talking about. My gen Z friends @fastioluwa and @yahuzah cannot related because they have only heard stories but haven’t experienced it in really life. Sad!😂

With internet connectivity, we have different levels to it. In Ghana, we only have 2G, 3G and 4G LTE but the rich people in Ghana have and other well to do countries use 5G. However, even with the level of internet connectivity we have here, not everyone can afford internet data these days. The rate at which internet data has become expensive is alarming, but we always find a way to purchase it. It’s more like how a drug addiction always find a way to get his drugs.

Now, should access to internet connectivity be considered a human right? I’d say this is subject cos on one level , I can live without it and on another level it would affect a lot of my stuff. Everyone uses the internet today and obviously, stopping someone from having access to internet can be considered as sim infringement of their rights. Looking at myself for instance, there’s a lot I do online and preventing me from having access to internet will affect my life so much.

Also, away from my personal life. Internet connectivity is needed in various areas such as health. Now, hospitals need internet to access patient data, drug prescriptions and even to use some machines. This will in a long run affect the smooth running of the hospital and also affect so many patients. Away from the health industry, many other industries also need internet for their daily activities and not having access to internet would affect their activism and even reduce their income in the long run.

Today, the world runs on technology and internet connectivity and taking away what makes the world revolve in a way would have so many negative effects. Taking away internet connectivity would do the world more harm than good.

Data is life. Thank Goodness I am Gen A kids. Those Gen Z should pack well.

Internet is now a part of our life. I always feel blank when I don’t have access to the internet.

Old man like you should be able to live without internet.😂

We're in a age and time where internet thrive and plays a huge role and I don't think restricting peoples access would be ideal, so I agree with you on the need to make it a fundamental human rights that goes on to improve the quality of life and access to valuable information.

Right! Technology has come to stay.
