Hello, everyone.
Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. As our world continues to evolve, a lot of things that used to be of great importance and of great value are slowly losing their value. Those days, history used to be a compulsory subject that every student must offer, but today it is not just optional but has been scrapped from the curriculum. History plays a role, that just story telling from elders cannot play that role as they cannot cover it all like history does. As kids are prepared for the future using science and all other sources of knowledge, it is also best that they know their roots, where they come from, and the role their forefathers played to either help human civilization or the role they played to destroy it.
Having historical knowledge is one of the few things that are of great importance to every human being, and it is best gotten as kids or young students so it sticks, but instead of giving it the value it deserves, it is underrated and undervalued. With the right knowledge of history, we will be able to raise better citizens, as no one will want to make the mistake their forefathers or those before them made; instead, they will learn from it and avoid suffering the same consequences.
Growing up as a high school student, I never got the opportunity to attend a history class since I was a science student, but I had friends from other schools that made every subject compulsory with history as one of those compulsory subjects. They had the insights of things that happened long ago both within the country and outside the country. Trust me, whenever they start to argue, the rest of us just stay on the sidelines and watch, especially when they discuss and talk about the year, month, and day certain things happened. You can only wish you attended a history class as you admire them.
I finally got to attend a history class as a university student, which was a general course for new students, and I did enjoy it though it did not last, but I did enjoy it while it lasted. A lot happened in the past, and one can only get to learn about all that happened before them if and only if they study history. Without history, our past, our ancestry and forefathers, and our origins are completely forgotten. History is the only thing that keeps all of this fresh in our minds.
The study of history gives you the knowledge your mom and dad cannot give you; there is a knowledge only history can give you, and if you are not opportuned to gain it, then you might never gain it again unless you decide to do it yourself and not wait to be taught. History is of great importance when taken seriously and when learned from. Like in the case of Nigeria, hatred has existed between different tribes since time immemorial, and when you study history, you see that it did them no good. If kids are exposed to history, maybe they will be able to learn from their forefathers mistakes, and instead of hating on each other, they can do something better.
So for this, I feel history should be taught in schools as it will serve as a guide to generations to come; they will not want to repeat the same mistake the people before them made and suffered some consequences; they will avoid plying the same road as people before them did.
