The illusion of democracy

Here in my country, everything is wrong with the democratic system of government because everything is in the government's favor and not for the citizens. I thought democracy was when everyone has a say in the affairs of the country and there is a representative up there for the sake of the whole country, but here in Nigeria, it is the other way around because it is only people who are in power that have a say, and anything they do or say is final without any consideration for the citizens who would suffer more.

What we are running here in Nigeria is not a democracy but a crazy demo, since the citizens are suffering because of this same democracy that we are supposed to benefit from. This prompt makes me remember a Nigerian artist named Idris Abdul Careem. He sang one song some years ago in which he kept saying Nigeria Jaga Jaga, which means Nigeria has turned upside down, but then we were still enjoying some cheap food and cheap fuel, unlike now that things are more costly than they should be.

Yet people think we have democracy here in Nigeria; never have we don't have democracy; what we have is crazy demo, like I said earlier.

There are lots of things people are not happy about here in Nigeria because most people risk their lives to elect these politicians only for the politicians to turn their back on us when we need them the most, and yet these same people who almost died to put them in power are the ones suffering from lack of infrastructure and many other things in the country.

Meanwhile, the politicians made sure their families were doing okay without looking back at those people who made it happen for them.

It tears me apart whenever I think of this country because it's bad beyond what people think, and everyone who is still aiming for the presidential seat is not going there to repair the country but to embezzle money just like every other person who was there before.

The question is, "How sure are we that this country has a future?" Because this bad democracy has been the main problem Nigeria has had since I was little, and instead of getting better, it is getting worse.

People are frustrated mostly because of fuel, which has been very expensive lately. There is nothing any of us can do without fuel because we all need it for transportation; meanwhile, electricity is not regular as well, so all we have left is to depend on fuel, which is not affordable to everyone anymore.

I don't think there is any particular thing that could be done to bring Nigeria back to the way it should be, except if the people we elect change their ways and if the government can make sure to look into every activity done by the people in power instead of backing them up to ruin the country more.

We all can't be heard, and that is the truth, but if the government does what is right by flushing out the corrupted people in the democratic system, then the country would be better, and there would be no need for anyone to suffer again.

Sort:

The situation is very disturbing. When you think that things would begin to improve, all you get is a worse situation. Bad economy, insecurity and corruption are our major problems. I don't blame the leaders much because the leaders are a reflection of the people. Don't be surprised that if Tinubu contest for a second term today, he may be voted yo office again.

Am telling you, we thought we had seen it all with the former president and that Tinubu was old enough to control the situation not to know he coming there to make the country miserable for everyone

It's pathetic.

Everything is scattered. The government is nothing to write home about. Fuel is a no go area. People that live in the so called "the giant of Africa," are feeding from hand to mouth. Subsidy was removed but the impact to the economy has left everyone in worries.

The matter has tired everyone because now we are just living for living sake

No matter what they throw at us, we will survive

Honestly Ma, if God doesn't intervene, I fear there is nothing that can be done to make things better in Nigeria. Those we elected are only after their bellies and not the citizens

Am telling you, it is only God who can change this country o

😂 So true! The democracy we had ended with Goodluck Jonathan, every other president after him has been something else, the current one is even worse. We keep praying for things to get better in the country but it just keeps getting worse. It is well

I know one day sha God will bring someone who can bring back Nigeria to normal to the seat if not everyone is just there for the money and not for the country or the citizens
