Where do I start from now, because as soon as I read the question I exclaimed. As much as we want to deny it, the truth is that gadgets have become a part of our lives, some people can’t do without touching or pressing their phones for just thirty minutes. We are all partial gadget zombies if we can be honest. The only time I do not press my phone or use a computer/laptop is when I am busy with my hands, baking, or cleaning etc.
the slightest chance I get, I whip out my phone and I press away.
I recall one time I was sick and had to be admitted in the hospital for three days, my husband was with my phone all through, he didn’t allow me touch it at all, I almost lost my mind, he kept insisting I sleep, and rest and allow the drips work, I was bored out of my mind, the hospital television wasn’t doing it for me, I needed to press my phone, I began to feel like an addict, I even remember crying, pleading with him to allow me watch Netflix on my phone, but he refused. Personally I don’t like hospitals and if I fall sick which I hardly do and have to be admitted in the hospital, sleeping is always a struggle, no matter the drugs or iv’s
I am being given.
I know many of us Nigerians can relate to this one, remember on those awkward days where internet would be down for hours, sometimes from morning till night. It happens recently, from morning till midnight, the internet was down, it was No Service all through that day, i remember how frustrated and angry many people were that day, we couldn’t make calls, or access the social media space, it was really infuriating. I told my friend that period, that if this situation should become permanent, the whole country would go into a frenzy, it might even turn into something else because we are all gadget zombies, we rely too much on our phones, laptops and internet.
The question asks how will I cope with not having access to my phone or computer for a week and how will that week go?
It would be a really boring and long week, except I am on some destinations vacation with my husband and friends and family or Prayer mountain, I can explicitly tell you I would be frustrated all week and it would definitely affect my mood. Isolation isn’t fun, and because the social media space has become a place where we feel seen and heard via our phones and computers, not being able to access these things would feel like isolation. As much as I would try to read a book or two, I would still feel really frustrated. It would be like weaning a child off breast milk, the child becomes fussy and frustrated, and crying all the time for his or her mother’s sympathy for breast. That is exact how I would feel. And I know I speak for many other adults too.
Before the end of that week, knowing myself I might have weaned myself off phone to the point where I find a new routine to keep me busy but I would still grab my phone the first chance I get after the one week. The only time I am not with my phone or computer is when I am sleeping or my hands are busy.
