A good topic for reflection on one of the fundamental principles of living in a community and with respect for others is having discipline.
Education and discipline exist from the moment we are born, since rules of conduct are imposed from a very early age as a way of integrating ourselves into the society in which we live.
The main people responsible for transmitting values to us, including discipline, are our parents, who from an early age set rules for us to follow, and so we assimilate discipline into our lives from a very young age.
Discipline is often not the same for everyone, and this passing of the baton between parents and children in discipline is influenced by many factors.
If we want to address some of these factors that influence discipline, we can list one of them as the environment in which we are inserted, the cultural part. There are different types of discipline that are transmitted, often depending on the culture and the people in which we are inserted, and this different culture has its own rules so that this particular society that lives in this way and in this manner can live in communion with its values.
Other factors that can influence the transmission of discipline to our children often have to do with the parents themselves, and how they also look at the issue of discipline depends a lot on whether our parents also instilled these values and rules in them when they were children, because there is a great tendency for parents who were given disciplinary rules from a young age to one day, when they have children, want to pass on this same discipline to their children, while parents who for various reasons had an adolescence with few disciplinary rules, often cannot pass on this discipline to their children since they themselves did not have it when they were children. Today, as a father, I try to make discipline something that my children get used to.
I don't want any rigid discipline that seems to deprive us of our freedoms and rights. I want my children to grow up and learn living in society but knowing that there are rules to follow, and in order to achieve some life goals we must be disciplined. I believe that discipline must adapt to the environment in which we live and to each person, since not everyone is the same, nor do we all have the same behaviors, and we certainly have different ways of thinking and facing discipline.
In short, discipline is part of our society, it is part of us as human beings who intend to live in this world in society. Being disciplined does not mean that we cannot have our own criticism and our freedom, but we must know that the rules of discipline are very important so that we can live in a community, and in respect for others, we must abide by the rules that are imposed on us in a natural way as human beings inserted in a global world, but we must have the freedom to make our own path and our own choices.
In the end, depending on the path we take, we will or will not achieve what was planned. We must pass on discipline to our children in a way that is adaptable to each one and their way of being, and in the end, it is important that our children see that the discipline we impose on them is for their own good and that we, as parents, have the task of wanting the best for our children.
