What have you seen more on the internet this week? For me, it's "2023 is my year, New year, new me". I'm not one of those people who say the new year is just another day. To me, it's a fresh start, a clean slate. When I come into a new year, I feel life is giving me another chance and I have to give it a good shot. If you are like me, I'm sure you have drafted a vision board with Canva having gotten inspiration from Pinterest. There's already a list of goals for the new year. You are burning with new energy and motivation.
While planning and writing goals down is great and the first step to accomplishing anything, I've learned that it's not enough. Planning is just on paper and in our heads. As a standalone, it doesn't bring our goals to reality. The most important thing towards the accomplishment of your goals is action, ACTION guys for without it, all you have written down will remain fantasies and wishful thinking.
Action comprises some things and in this short article, I'll be breaking them down.
Intentionality
I preach intentionality like that's my last name. I've learned firsthand that if you treat things with nonchalance, you don't have the right to expect great results. When you write down goals, be intentional about seeing them come to life. It is doing things with purpose. There's a deliberate reason for cutting down your screen time to read more. You have calculated that to get A's you need to study every day. This year be as intentional as you possibly can and watch things change.
Make a breakdown of your goals
One of my goals last year was to read 20 books. To accomplish this, I had to break it down to make it easier and well-structured.
Goal: Read 20 books
How: Read 2 books every month then repeat an old book after the tenth month.
With this example, my big annual goal has been broken into monthly and weekly goals. It would be difficult to lose sight of the bigger goal this way.
If you want to get 5 As, you need to write down what you need to do to achieve that.
Create Habits
After breaking down your goals, you'll realize that there are certain habits that need to be worked on or put in place. For example, if you find it difficult to study, create a routine of studying for 10 minutes daily. Once you do this continually for two weeks, it becomes a part of you and before you know it, you would be studying for two hours daily.
Consistency:
Somebody said consistency is the mother of success and I couldn't agree more. Consistency is great because without it, there's no improvement and no improvement equals failure. Without consistency, you cannot create habits or form patterns. You need to do the same productive things you did last week to see results.
Set Realistic Goals
Being unrealistic in your goal setting is the surest way to set yourself up for failure. If you find it difficult to complete a book in 3 weeks, it's impractical to expect to complete 5 books in a month. So instead, you adjust your goal to one book per month till you're confident enough to change it.
Relate with like-minds
Talk, follow, and interact with people who are in your line of studies or career. No man is an island and we all need each other. Trade information and ask for assistance when needed. The interesting thing about being surrounded by like-minded people is that you become better, acquire more knowledge about that particular thing, and stand more chances to gain opportunities.
I'll end by saying dreams and wishes don't make our goals become reality, only the required amount of work and dedication does. Happy new year guys, I wish you all the best year.
