Today I received the biggest shock of my Hive career when someone close to me plagiarised. I received a call from him earlier this morning, informing me that he had received a comment from Hive Watchers accusing him of plagiarism. In his own words, he stated:

"he has passed it through plagiarizing tool before posting them and he saw it was unique"...

Now this is where my question arises....

Are you writing to share originality or to make spun contents unique?

I'm still trying to figure out why this friend plagiarised, despite knowing the consequences. Why on earth would anyone plagiarise... It is not difficult to share original content without having to plagiarise, or do people simply not understand the definition of originality (Uniqueness)?

It is very possible for multiple people to write on the same topic and have each of their articles be unique. The sense of feeling, tone, personality, and experience to that topic are what make it unique.

This is what I call Uniqueness (Originality).

This is why I don't understand why anyone would deliberately seek to plagiarise unless it is done to reap rewards or under duress to create content.

There is a reason why I don't write frequently; it's not because I don't have anything to write, but because I don't want to put pressure on myself to write; I don't want to think about having to look through the internet to plagiarise, which I have never done and will never do.

If you want to write about an item or topic that requires you to conduct research on the internet, there is a way to do so that does not require you to copy from what has already been written. It is simply by sharing your personal thoughts on the subject or item.

I've created content for tech reviews in which I had to research a product and write a review about it. I accomplished this without even having to plagiarise. What makes this possible? That is because I wrote more about my personal thoughts rather than claiming things from the internet, and I also gave credit to reference sites.

Never assume that just because a plagiarism tool says your work is unique means it is free of plagiarism...

If you used a plagiarism detector for your work in the first place, you are aware that you did something wrong and are attempting to avoid being caught. Personally, I have never used a plagiarism detector on any of my content because I know what I wrote and the true source of the content.

I don't see why you should run your work through a plagiarism detector when you know what you wrote is based solely on your personal experience. I've only used an online plagiarism detector when scanning through other people's content, never mine.

If you write an article that prompts you to check for plagiarism, you know you've plagiarised...

When you are Original in your contents, You are Original...

Being unique distinguishes you from the crowd and allows you to feel fulfilled. I'm not sure about you, but it makes me feel fulfilled because you know your content is yours. You don't have to go through any detectors for your articles. You create an audience that likes you because of your tone and feel...

I'm not sure why anyone would plagiarise right now, but I know it's something people will do no matter how much we speak out against it. It irritates me, but what can I do?

By the way, I had no intention of writing a post today... it just happened...

THANKS FOR VISITING MY BLOG πŸ˜‡πŸ’•

Sort: Β

You just made good points. The fact that he said he used a checker shows that he has been doing that. Well, no matter how much they stress the issue of plagiarism people will not still stop. No need to use the checker for me because it's what comes to my mind that is communicated.

We keep doing our best anyway.

Thanks for sharing

Personally, the fact that he had to go check it simply shows that he's not sure of what he has written. When you create your content yourself and with your ability, you get this great satisfaction from inside of you. Am sorry it happened to a close friend of yours.

I thing it is just an act of laziness that will make anyone plagiarized on hive when personal thought and experience are more valuable than any other site one can think of.

I have never have the needs to use plagiarism checker on my own work as well. I rather put my own thoughts out there than go down the shameful road of stealing someone else content.

Thank you, I think it is laziness that is the bottom of it all.. With your personal experience, one is definitely free from plagiarism...

when I hear someone does it, it sounds absurd to me. I have been writing for years on the chain without having a single case of plagiarism. Why can't they do the same?

Why can't they do the same?

Lack of seriousness i think, I'm glad we have people like hive watchers and some other thoughtful individuals putting them in their places.

There's not much you can do than speak against. Original contents give better satisfaction. But some may think that internet articles are more Sound.

Worse is, this act numbs and rubs us of our creativity. Truth is, it's actually much more easier to write from our little knowledge than lift other people's work.

Worse is, this act numbs and rubs us of our creativity.

Thank you! when you are too independent on sources from the internet, then how would one get creative? you gave a really nice point there.

Where there is no law, there is no sin. Since there is a law that doesn't give room to plagiarism, following it to the latter will be the best thing to do.

That's a good illustration for the case of plagiarism, if people should know about this, the best for them, they will be careful

Plagiarism is a huge offense and I believe it is avoidable as long as we are unique with our write-ups.

I haven't used a plagiarism tool before as well and I agree with the fact that if I am clean with my write up, I don't need checking.

Recently, inkwell community contacted me because they wanted to be sure if I wrote the story I shared. It wasn't the first time though and I have always come out clean because I always try to be unique with my content.

The pressure to write and earn has led people in picking content to use as their own and I agree with the point you made about writing when we are good to do so. My content should be a reflection of my thoughts so no rush.

The pressure to write and earn has led people in picking content to use as their own

Yeah, this is so true about some people on Hive, and there are quite a lot doing this.

Recently, inkwell community contacted me because they wanted to be sure if I wrote the story I shared. It wasn't the first time though and I have always come out clean because I always try to be unique with my content.

Now imagine if you had spun contents from the internet, having to be contacted by the inkwell community over the story you wrote would make you unsettled.

I wouldn't have been able to respond if I cheated, I hope the person realizes his mistake and never do it again.

Again???? Sorry for going through it bro. It's disheartening for sure. Hope the person will learn from experience and never sin (read plagiarize) again.

"You can only take the horse to the river, but you cannot force it to drink from it."

...is a statement that I think I am just beginning to understand much better.

It's disheartening to have someone close leverage on your support and trust, only to do what you'd detest... even more so to find that the individual in question does it right under your nose.

Onboarding is a risk, and everybody knows it. But we do it anyway because we feel a wonderful ecosystem like Hive should be shared with the world and not hoarded.

But what can we do? We cannot have complete control over our newbies. Say we even can...for how long?

I don't know how people can stomach reading something that's not theirs but passed as "unique.". Where's the integrity in that?

There's a fine line between "unique" and "original," and people often miss it.

where is the fulfilment in it? having to look at your content and cannot proudly say it is originally yours. When I go through my content, I am always fulfilled because I know they were from my thinking, thoughts and experiences shared.

If you write an article that prompts you to check for plagiarism, you know you've plagiarised

Couldn't agree more. Once the thought to check for plagiarism crosses your mind, you have more than likely already plagiarized and are now looking for a way to mask it and hide it from coming to light.

I don't think it's really difficult to create original content. There's so much going around us that can turn into content if you just know how to write. These are things going on around YOU. Experiences unique to only you and no one else. Writing from your own experience and point of view can not be that difficult.

Well, most people pressure themselves into writing even when they don't have content, and that ends with them plagiarizing because they just read up some generic stuff on the internet and try to spin it in their own words and pass it on as theirs. There's no pressure to blog. If you have nothing to write, be a reader for the time being then. Read and engage with others until you have something to write about. It can't be that difficult to do.

I'm sorry this happened with someone close to you. You're an awesome teacher and hiver, and I and several others are witnesses to it. Stay strong and don't be shaken by this.

This is a very good advice @depressedfuckup... when one begins to read more, we begin to have thoughts of our own which can inspire us to write contents on our own. So having to read and engage with others can help to inspire as well. Not difficult to do at all.

Congratulations am very happy to see you at this level and also passionate to be a part of hive and I will work hard to become like u....

In academic research paper writing it is required to do a literature review- writing what already has been done in the field; but it is required to not plagiarism, instead write in your own words. This might be a reason why someone would run one's write up in plagiarism detector.

Being associated with research paper writing I also had an idea that the blogging would accept the same thing as do magazines. However, I later realized that social media blogging is quite different realm. It is about personal experiences and opinions. It's about originality where you need not to be statistically correct but be You. Blogging is a space where the personsl thoughts (no matter how weired) are accepted.

Well, I see no reason why one writes something from his head and still uses a plagiarism checker...the action is questionable.

For the few people I have onboarded so far, I have been singing it for them like a song, don't copy and paste please but write from your heart even if it's not lengthy.

I am sorry this is happening under your nose, your effort, time, and everything putting newbies through and this happens. Don't be discouraged Star, there are still some who vividly abide by your training. Whether laziness or lack of creativity, we have no excuse to plagiarize as it's frowned upon in hive.

lack of creativity, we have no excuse to plagiarize as it's frowned upon in hive.

yah, we surely do. I mostly prefer not to write at all when I am in such moods.

Don't be discouraged Star,

hmmm...

This is the main reason why I don't introduce Hive to just anybody, because a good number of people will take it for granted and try to milk the system dry.
Just like you said, if you make profits your main focus, you will end up looking for illegal ways to meet up.
At the end of the day creativity doesn't come easily for everyone.

It is well. At least the upside to this is it gave you an idea for a post!

If his content was original in the first place, I see no reason why he used a plagiarism detector. Using a detector means you know the work isn't yours. Originality and uniqueness should be your work, not some else.

It is simply by sharing your personal thoughts on the subject or item.

100% true. When am confused or stuck on what to write, I read through others' posts to know their understanding of the topic and from there I get inspiration to write my own post.

He probably felt overwhelmed to make a post but still, that is no excuse to plagiarise. Am sure he must have learnt his lesson now and know what it means for a piece to be unique.

I think sometimes the temptation of money is in play ... or status ... or being recognized ... Hive can be a hard place to start or continue. I tune out so many people complaining that their work is not seen or rewarded, and if someone really NEEDS both, for whatever reason, but also feels like they can't break through on their own, the temptation to plagiarism will be there. Adversity -- which Hive hands out in the months of steady work it takes to be noticed here sometimes -- reveals weaknesses of character as nothing else does. The only solution is to do the work and get better at it...

I thought I was the only one not using the plagiarism checker, turns out I'm not.

And like what you said when you're original you are original.

You can't write from your heart or perspective and get plagiarized. because you are not trying to be perfect, you are trying to be original.

because you are not trying to be perfect, you are trying to be original.

yeah, perfection doesn't even exist.. but being you, with your flaws makes you original and truly Unique.

Some people don't want to put effort in creating content! when one make a original content, you'll be satisfied within, because you know you did it yourself.

I wonder why people still involved in plagiarism , well, I thinking laziness is one of the factors that contribute to it, they don't want to think outside the box in creating an original content. it's not only about the money we earn alone, the originality must be there as well, because that's when you can boldy say to yourself, "I did it"

Taking education for example, As student who is always involved in malpractice can not boldy defend his/her result, but when when you burn the night candle and do the right things, of course, he/she will be proud of the result, same thing applies to the issue of plagiarism.

That's a good illustration for the case of plagiarism, if people should know about this, the best for them.

Today my lecturer was discussing Entrepreneurship and he said, although making profits is the ultimate goal of an entrepreneur but it must never be the first goal or else, he would lose focus. The same thing goes for Hive, you do it primarily for the rewards, and then there would be pressure to have to plagiarise to meet up.

I can feel how you felt… you are a great teacher and a nice one at that.

Well, I have use a plagiarism checker once (when I asked for the website), it was so stressful for me. Honestly.

So, the rest of my posts I didn’t use plagiarism checker because all of my posts, I wrote them personally. So, I was like what is the point?

I have been scared that what if someone has actually written a word that I wrote before in their posts… but I just felt it is like checking is an adding stress for me (I have always considered myself lazy)

But then, I was like if it is a word that counts for plagiarism, then it is really going to be hard because they are lot of words that are seen in people’s post. So, I suggested it is like sentence or paragraph that can get you plagiarised because it hard for someone to write the sentence or paragraph as you.

Well, I have always wanted to ask the question.. but I just don’t want to disturb…, and this post has just clarified my thoughts

I’m sorry for the disappointment. Thanks for the reminder

Just my thoughts exactly, you using a plagiarism checker means you plagiarized and you still dare call that original, wow, that person nor be small thing you dey do oo, lolz in case the person read my comment 😁.

Well as a source of motivation but we all know we owe that to ourselves, we should avoid checking our contents with a plagiarism checker because that is the reason why some dare to plagiarize in the beginning, if there was no plagiarism checker people will be more conscious of what they call original.

Abeg nor too vex oo but vex, that thing is super annoying, how can you plagiarize even after you have been told countless times that it is a sin especially here on the blockchain. It is well sha, we hope we don't bring people that won't listen to simple advice. But how did the person even get to know of plagiarism checker? We should discourage the use of that for personal blogs.

you using a plagiarism checker means you plagiarized and you still dare call that original, wow, that person nor be small thing you dey do oo, lolz in case the person read my comment 😁.

The tone that I read this, I was just smiling...

But how did the person even get to know of plagiarism checker?

I screen their post through a plagiarism checker before allowing them to publish. This person is someone that is close to me, so he knows I do it for others but since he is close and has gotten enough story from me about plagiarism and the damages it has caused, I least expected it from him. So I don't pass his post through the detector before doing anything.

I'm happy it made you smile sha, lolz.

Oh, I get it now, oma that person need spanking, make I use oyibo take talk that one, I get why 😏. Well, this also shows that curators have so much work to do, because assuming can cost them a lot too. Don't mind the person ehn, I'm sure he will be wiser now but then bring him in for spanking, he need am. Abeg I nor get power to settle fight oo, I do run first πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚.

The most disappointing fact is when someone who is expected to uphold the rules based on their experience they have had on hive, to find such person violating the rules is extremely disappointing.

Apart from plagiarism being an offence on hive, it's also a sin against content generators, it's like robbing someone of their ownership of a property.

Writing original content is never difficult, it just the ability to conceptualise your thoughts based on your understanding and you could add some pictures to display your ideas visually to your readers.

I see no reason while anybody should plagiarise on hive even among newbies because hive belong is a kind of platform that doesn't expect you to be a professional writer in order to make a post. Just write your thoughts and be creative about it.

Unlike other blogs where there are certain knowledge or skills of blogging you must acquire before being a writer. I believe some people are just prone to commit illegal activities based on their greed regardless of their experiences.

Moreover, chances of plagiarism should be low because 6 people could read a write up online and they won't write the same thing because their perspective of the subject differs from each other.

I believe plagiarism is an act of laziness among authors who want quick rewards and profit driven not content oriented.that is what differentiates a business man from a writer. Writing is never about profit.
