I could remember in the year 2005 after Finishing my secondary school certificate examination (SSCE), i decided to work in the following year (2006) for the first time in a supermarket as a sales boy. The job was good and nice, because i used to see and attend to different people everyday though, it was strenuous being the only sales boy as at that time but i love the job.
The name of the supermarket is perennial super mart it was located at sabo area in Ondo city, Ondo State Nigeria. But it was later moved to Adeyemi area after so many years, the owner of the supermarket is a lecturer at Adeyemi college of education Ondo.
Whenever there's new stocks, my boss will instruct me to take all the records for the new stocks in order to have proper documentation. My salary was not much, just #3,500 (three thousand and five hundred naira only) so because of the little amount of money i used to trek from my house to the supermarket almost everyday and i must resume as early as 7:30am, so i would have been on the way as early as 6:30am because my house was a little bit far from my working place and i didn't late for any day throughout the time i was working there.
The job taught me a lot of lesson as a sales boy, you must be friendly and accommodating because this is what will attract customers to you, also you must be very patient with your customers when dealing with them as most of the customers will be in hurry and if you are not careful you will make mistake. This reminded me of a particular day when i was about to close, a customer came in to purchase a tin of bournvita and he was so much in hurry that i myself was also in hurry to answer him so that i can go home in time but i made a great mistake i will never forget, when i want to give him the balance of his money instead to give him #680 (six hundred and eighty naira) i gave him #6,080 (six thousand and eighty naira) just because i used #500 (five hundred naira) as #50 (fifty naira) and he collected it and went away. After he left i now realized my mistake but it was too late and since then i learnt to be patient when dealing with my customers.
Like i said earlier, the job was good and nice because i knew all the price of every items in the store and i meet different people everyday, though i work there for just one year because i wanted to further my education by writing an external examination in order to gain admission into higher institution, if not i will not leave there because my boss is a very good man, he took me like his son by taking care of me always.
If i had the chance i will go back there to work, now that is more bigger than before and it is even closer to where i'm living now.
