When it comes to discipline don't look too far African parents are really good in discipling children. I was raised in an African home, where beatings can straighten your head and make you act right. To other countries these physical discipline might actually look like sufferness, but to African parents this was the only way to keep us in check, and it has helped me alot.
African parents believe in the saying which says" "Spare the rod and spoil the child".
My mom was a no nonsense woman, there are many rules she gave us which are" Don't collect things from strangers, Don't take things visitors gave you, tell them you don't want and say thank you, don't beg from your class mates, always sit probably, and setting boundaries between the opposite gender" etc.
There was a day I decided to act stubborn and challenge my mom's authority. On a weekend, my mom's friend came visiting and my mom went out to get drinks for her. She had earlier told us that, anytime visitors comes visiting we should go away, but I decided to stay to see what will happen. My mom gave a sign with her eyes, but I ignored it.
she was disappointed in me that very day, after the visitors had drank little out of her drink, she handled it to me, and I drank all in front of my mom.
After the visitor had left my mom called me inside, and gave me the beating of my life. At first I dislike my mom with the way she treated us, until one day when our neighbors child was poisoned from collecting stuffs from outsiders, it was then I realize that we need to be careful with what we collect from strangers.
One of the lesson I learnt from my mom is how to be careful in collecting things from strangers.
I also learnt how to be prayerful, trust me african moms can pray, and that has been helping me, it's has been a guiding force in my life.
Another lesson I learnt from my mom is how to cook, African mom's don't joke with that, there was a time I didn't know how to cook,my mom would abuse me and tell me it's the qualities for me to get married, and no body would get married to me if I don't know how to cook. Most of the times I usually watch some of my colleagues eat out and how they spent so much on food, but learning how to cook has helped me to save more.
I was also taught on how to stand on my feet. Before gaining admission into the university my mom helped to look for job so I could earn and get things I need, she would tell me " I can't give you everything you want, you should learn how to work and get them yourselves, it has so helped me to be independent.
This habit instilled in me by my mom have shaped me and allow me to be a better person.
