Working to provide for your school needs is a very challenging situation. You will have both the pressure from work and the pressure from school. Projects and home assignments are also time limited and you will have no time to relax.
There can be many reasons why anyone would work while studying.
Others work while studying to pay for things that interest them such as gym memberships, clothing, gadgets, and other things outside their school and lodging budget.
However, a vast majority of them have NO CHOICE but to work to support their studies.
There are many ways anyone can work while studying. However, I find out that we can broadly categorize the kind of work into either the easier or the harder method.
The Easier vs The Harder Method
The easier method was to work for the school you are enrolled in. I don’t know what it is called in other countries but we call them student assistants. They work for the school during their free time in exchange for full or partial payment of their school fees.
When you work for the school, your schedule is mostly taken care of, and depending on the nature of work (e.g. library duty) you can study while working. And since you are already within the school campus, you usually don’t run into issues when making it on time to your class.
The harder method is when we work outside of school. And, unfortunately, most of the working students fall under this category.
Looking for a job alone is difficult as we are limited by factors such as location, schedule, wage, and the nature of the job. And landing a job often times conflict with your school schedule.
I’ve heard that in other countries, they offer a per-hour job which is suitable for working students. In my country, however, it is very differently difficult. Student or not, you have to complete your whole 8 to 12-hour shift per day continuously. During work emergencies, they may even work double shifts! That is 16 to 24 hours!
Work vs Study – Learning how to Manage your Time.
When you work and study at the same time, everything is time limited. You rarely have free time. Thus you will learn how to manage and maximize your time.
I am sure that you will feel envious of your peers for not attending those social events and parties or those mini-vacations.
Cheer up!
You can experience what you miss after landing a great job. However, I doubt you would do that. As you will learn the value of time. I am sure you will be proud and might even be glad that you did not tread with the trend/heard.
Learning what the School is NOT Teaching
Some say that the best place to learn is at school. But I doubt it, as NOT everything is being taught at school.
Working while studying may not give you the best grades but it will place you ahead of the race and armed with the necessary experience.
Take a look around, the competition is tough and companies are looking for people with experience.
My Personal Experience
If you’re asking if I did work while studying, my answer is simply NO. But, that is what I am regretting even to this day.
Sure, I did work during school breaks but that is very different from working while studying at the same time.
Conclusion
Working while at the same time studying is VERY HARD. But, it will also impart VERY IMPORTANT lessons that are not being thought at school.
And students who experienced having to work while studying are at a great advantage.
