But seriously why do people cheat? Be it in a relationship or general dealings of life , why do people need to take advantage of others to feel fulfilled ? To so many, it is a billion dollars question, the answer is neither here nor there.
Why?
Funny thing is, both the one cheated and the cheat have asked this question uncountable times. Many reasons have been given, from the meaningful to the completely meaningless.
In the course of life, everyone, one way or the other have had a reason to complain of being cheated of something. The general perception of cheating is usually associated with relationships, but like we all know it cuts across all spheres of life.
Everywhere we turn to, we are awash with news of one form of cheating or the other. Is it the daily scams or the recent news of a cheating music star with not just one but up to 3 different women. So the question still remains, why do people cheat?
Well, maybe because of their low self opinion. Probably to revenge for an action against them. Or perhaps they see an opportunity and decided to take it despite the fact it will hurt others.
No matter the reasons adduced, it's always painful to experience being cheated on. It's even more painful when it is coming from people we know. Like one of my experiences with my own brother. It was quite painful. Imagine someone you contributed towards his university education taking advantage of your ignorance at your lowest moment.
Like every other persons, I have had multiple experiences with cheating. The above story being just one of many. In some cases, though few, I have been the one doing the cheating, lol. I guess that is a story for another day.
Like I said, I have had many experiences, one in particular readily comes to mind, especially when you consider the profile of the person and organisation that was involved.
One of my side job is corporate branding. I prepare souvenirs , Gift and merchandising items for companies and individuals that wants them. A company saw one of my works and contacted me to produce something similar for them. I was supposed to meet with the MD of the organisation to finalise the order.
On the day of the meeting, I met the MD, a woman, and other staffs. After my pitch, the MD called me into her office, asked me my qualifications and begged me to work for them as their business development manager. There and then she asked me to name how much I want as salary.
I was not looking for a job as I had my personal stuff I was pushing. She begged me and told me I don't need to come to the office everyday as I can work from home. Plus I would be given some equipments and an official car. It sounded nice, as I would have time to pursue my other businesses. I told her my salary expectation thinking that would put her off. Surprisingly she agreed to it.
To cut the story, I took up the job and also I was awarded the contract for the souvenirs, which was what took me there in the first place.
The job was a bit stressful than I had expected. As a business development manager, I had to draw up and defend a lot of plans and proposals. I represented the company everywhere and even did beyond what my job description says.
Then the first month ended, no salary. For a big organisation like that I was quite surprised. I asked the accountant and he told me salary for the current month are normally paid at the third week of the next month. Not too impressed with that, I said OK.
Third week came and gone, still no salary. By now I was not finding it funny. I met the accountant again, he told me to call the MD, who at the time was in USA. She told me to wait for her.
Suffice to say she came back to the country and still would not pay, not just me though. I couldn't understand why. To a large extent I know the inflows into the organisations account and how much of that my personal effort brought in.
After much back and forth between us, after days, she approved the payment of 70% of my first month salary alone. After almost 3 months with them already. I was livid and gave her a piece of my mind. I was beyond caring. After all I was not really keen on the job in the first place. Right there I resigned. To hell with their job.
To compensate myself and make myself happy, I refused to return the companies properties in my possession. If not for the fact that the companies security refused me going home with the official car that last day, maybe I would have also kept the car, lol. All in all I was happy I held back those items, it made it easier for me to get over the incidence.
Here is the thing, people suffer from many forms of cheating every other day. This type of story is more like a daily occurrence. Unfortunately most people don't really need a motive to cheat, its ingrained in their dna. We just need to be more careful and vigilant to avoid falling into their traps.
