The necessity and challenges of pursuing multiple careers

in #hive-1538504 months ago

In recent years, many people have pursued multiple careers for different reasons, such as their passion, a desire for sustainability due to current inflation, and the like. These have raised debate as to whether it's an idea or not for an individual to have multiple careers, and so I'll be talking about this in detail as well as stating my take on it.

To start with, I don't think there's any big deal in chasing another career. As we all might have known while growing up, many of us nurture dreams of a certain profession, and these change with time based on our experiences and encounters in life, so as we grow, even though we're working in one career, the passion we've had for the other can play out in shaping our pursuit of that career as well.

Take, for instance, that I've always talked about my love for fashion and cloth making, and while growing up, I even went to vocational school to learn about it, and yet I didn't pursue a career in that aspect in the end but now work as a teacher. But even though I worked as a teacher, I still nurtured this dream and have been saving up to build a fashion house, which means if I actualize that dream, I'll also be pursuing two careers at a time.

Of course, these have economic value, especially in a time like this when the economy is crashing, leading to inflation, a high cost of living, and not forgetting the fact that the minimum wage can't sustain workers any longer, so most people who double their careers would tend to have an edge to survive this period compared to those who don't.

And that's why many are delving into other careers just so they can survive and sustain themselves and their families, and I won't blame them for that because I'd do the same, and being on a hive could as well be seen as another career for me since I also earn here and tend to spend time here.

However, despite how good the idea of having multiple careers is, it has its downsides, and one of them is that it can lead to distraction in both jobs and a lack of concentration that would affect their performance and effectiveness in delivering their job efficiently.

I've seen this play out when I was doubling two careers several years ago when I was working both as a per-time teacher and a sales rep at a gas station, and I know how distracted I can be sometimes from the first job, affecting the second during that time, but due to how underpaid I was, I stuck to both jobs to survive.

Also, these distractions could also not allow us to concentrate on both careers to the point where we can't compete or rise in rank in either choice of career, which also draws back to ineffectiveness and the like.

But regardless of these, like I said earlier, I'm not against having multiple careers. Inasmuch as the government ain't willing to pay a sustainable minimum wage, then workers and civil servants can do all they can to savage the situation to save themselves as well as help their families survive these difficult moments.

So with that being said, I'll obviously also pursue another career. If I had the opportunity and wouldn't think twice about it or the implications it'll cause to my first career or concentration on it, and my reasons for that aren't far-fetched, my current wages can't even sustain me for feeding and transportation alone weekly, not to mention other necessities like rent, bills, and the like.

Thanks so much for your time. I hope you enjoyed the read. Have a great day, and stay blessed.

Having multiple careers isn't bad but the attention needed to ensure all flourish at the same time that's where the issue might lay.

In Nigeria today it's the multiple streams of income people are using to sustain their families.

Yea it affects commitment and concentrate, but as one stream of income can't aid the family, many have no choice but to delve into multiple careers.

For most persons, having an extra stream of income is based off on survival, not like they enjoy outworking themselves.
Considering how unstable the economy is, it's only wise that people embrace more options that will provide them just enough to stay afloat.

Yea that's very true, everyone wants less stress and more fun, but for survival reserve is what we do.

I believe the key point is to adapt. Whether it's to conditions, opportunities, or dreams, we first have to think about the basics. It's difficult for someone to change professions without first becoming established, but on the other hand, it's not feasible to pursue a dream career if it doesn't put food on the table. It's a very complex issue.

Yea it's difficult to chase a career that can't sustain us, however that's the reality of today's world and that's why many people indulge in multiple jobs to earn more and survive.

Yeah, I don’t think pursing two careers is bad but then I feel it will only make one career suffer because your attention will be divided just as you rightly mentioned.

No matter how many careers we have, it’s just good that we focus on one at a time but that is if we want to give the best for it. Although it is possible to give the best in both careers but then it is going to be hard.

Yea one always suffers, unfortunately it's not a thing must people can do without because one stream of income isn't enough to sustain them and their family any longer, and so the reason why they do it despite these downside.
