History is a teacher, I mean peope say there are a whole lot of teachings and ways to learn but then one of the best ways of learning is through history and also experiences.
Follow me, let's go back in time. Let me tell us a little story that happened long time ago from where I come from.
I am a proud Nigerian boy from the eastern part of Nigeria, well, as you already know it, I am an Igbo boy from Anambra state to be precise.
There is a place called Alor in Anambra state. In the early 1500s century, there was a disagreement between the Alor people and their neighboring town, which later turned into war, I mean there were a whole lot of killings (you could call it world way I 😂)
Some of the neighboring towns joined hands with their enemies, fighting against the Alor people which even made the killing worse from both sides and they suffered losses.
The king of Alor now made consultations to their gods on what to do to win the war, and he was told by their gods to send away his first son out of his land never to set his face on him again, and then he'll win, but if otherwise done, he'll loose.
The king obeyed the voice of their gods and explained to his son. He got his son a wife and sent him away, far from his town, far from home.
This king son went very far from home, over 200km away from his fathers town.
In those days, most of the places were buses or forest, where people don't even live. He kept walking till he saw another town towards the southern part of the state.
The name of that town today is Nnewi.
Here, he went to built a tent inside the forest, where he dwell with his wife, and After a while his wife gave birth to a baby boy and named this boy UKPOR
He built a big shrine as a place where he'd be worshiping his gods, and he called it UDUKPOR meaning (the gods of his son) this name was inspired because he believed the gods gave him a son so he worshiped even harder.
The rest of his Children were females and he later died in a very ripe age, he lived for over 150 years on earth.
At this time the son was already grown and was even married, he had 9 male children excluding the females.
When Ukpor children grew to the age of marriage, their father was sending them to farther places, giving to them lands for their own occupations and possessions.
They had no neighbors, I mean they were so far from everywhere so each of them were given very big portions of land.
9 of them gave birth and when the men are grown enough to a marriageable age, their fathers will settle them with lands just as they were also settled.
As the years are going, the same way they were expanding across the land,
But the females were not settled with lands unlike the men because they will get married to a man out of the family which their children will inherit their own property.
These are part of the reasons why the Igbo people don't give their female children lands, because they will leave the house to get married to an outsider, becoming part of their family.
the more they expanded, the more territory they were occupying, from here, they formed a kindred, from kindred to village and from village to a town.
Any smaller town they meet as they are expanding, they will fight them and take possession of the land unless they agree to be their slaves.
They did that and became very large, even till date.
When the world developed to the 18-1900s they became a very recognized large town.
From the 1900s till date, there were already a lot of developments so they get to even marry from Alor town, these generations had no idea that that's where there were from, they had no idea of the war.
Now, the town UKPOR has become a very big city, they are now local government headquarters Nnewi south.
Right now, the development has gotten to schools, markets, hospitals, even big and good main roads, good water, worship centers like churches , and so on...
One thing I like about Ukpor is that as large as Ukpor is, they still have one common union as a family.
As of today, they are over 2 million people, and yet they cooperate.
And this the history of my town, I guess we're both learning this today.
Thank you for your time.
