INTRODUCTION

Geeese will always fly forming a gaint V and about 10 to 20 of them fly together. In the autumm when it's nearly dusk, honking. Our focus will be on Canada geese.

GOOSE is a water bird closely related to the duck and swan. There are 40 species of geese worldwide, they be are most commonly seen in Asia, Europe and North America.

Canada goose is one of the best known specie with long dark neck and white patch about it's throat. Matured males of Canada species can weigh upto 8 kilograms and a wing span of 2 meters.

Goose spends its summer in Alaska and Northern Canada and then migrate to as far as South and Mexico for the winter months. The timing of migration is very critical for geese because if they arrive too soon, the water will still be frozen and vegetation will still be scarce. It is interesting to know that when they arrive at their destination, they devide into pairs, each will then establish it's own breeding ground.

Flying in formation allows geese to keep one another in view and to respond quickly when the bird in front changes direction, speed, or altitude. In addition some experts believe that the air current created by the geese upfront makes flight easier for the rest of the flock, reducing air turbulence. Often Canada geese use the same nest year after year. Geese are monogamous- that is they have only one mate for life. If one of the mate dies, the surviving goose might accept another mate or choose to remain alone.

The female lays between 4 to 8 eggs, the mother incubates the egg for about 28 days.

The parents are formidable protectors, geese can be quite aggressive when threarened, they can deliver powerful blows with their wings against predators. There are about 13 distinct calls among Canada geese. Gosling begin communicating while still in the egg. Geese give evidence of being instinctively wise.
