Embracing Neurodiversity

in #hive-1552456 months ago

Neurodivergence is a term that embraces diversity of brain structures and makeups. It recognizes the inherent value in cognitive differences.

An umbrella term for conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Dyslexia etc which are characterized by developmental differences that impact an individual's perception and interactions with the world. The neurodiversity movement has advocated for greater acceptance of neurological differences in the same way we accept ethnic, gender, and sexual diversity.

It challenges the idea that neurotypical or ‘standard’ brain functioning is the only or best way to process information and experience life. Here we would like to inform our readers that neurodivergent individuals often possess unique strengths, such as heightened creativity, the ability to focus intensely on subjects of interest, and innovative problem-solving skills. However they may face challenges in traditional learning and social situations due to a lack of awareness.

In recent years there has been a shift towards recognizing the potential of neurodivergent individuals with many companies seeking to employ them for their unique perspectives and skills. This inclusivity not only benefits the individuals by providing them with opportunities but also enriches society by fostering diverse ways of thinking.

It is important to note that being neurodivergent is not a disease to be cured, but an integral part of human diversity. Thus the ultimate goal would be to create a society that appreciates and supports all forms of neurological functioning. By doing so we could unlock the full potential of every individual human, and move towards a more inclusive and innovative society.

Great post! A lot of general education is needed about neurodivergent individuals.

This text is only an exposition of doubts about the concept of "neurodivergence", I am not trying to be right, but I am trying to show that things can be more complicated.

I do not doubt the good intentions of the use of the term "neurodivergence". But I think it starts from a fundamental error, to think that there is a type of model brain.

I believe that there is no "normal" model brain and that psychiatric labels try to identify what deviates from the norm. But who says what is normal and what is not normal? No two minds in the world are the same, no two brains are the same. We are all divergent.

A second issue that concerns me is the medicalization of childhood on the basis of supposed organic disorders. In the case of ADHD recently "La Asociación Madrileña de Salud Mental" published a document [TRASTORNO POR DÉFICIT DE ATENCIÓN PRIMARIA Análisis crítico del Protocolo de atención a personas con TDAH en Atención Primaria de la Comunidad de Madrid] warning of the little science behind the mainstream in psychiatry around ADHD and the dangers associated with its concept of "disease".
