When was the last time you let your mind wander? I had one of those moments some weeks ago and can't wait to have more of them in the future.
It happened on the same day when I went out with a couple of friends from Hive PH (@romeskie, @lhes, @cindee08, @demotry, and @bananzell) and had a mini-field trip in Ayala Museum! I haven't written my POV of the trip yet but feel free to check out Ate Lhes' and Ate Rome's posts.
After parting ways with them, I ventured into an adventure of my own. To where exactly? I don't know. I was on a very tight budget, and for the most part, I had to make sure I don't get too derailed because I might miss my bus!
As I started to walk to my destination, I also watched the sea of people moving in the same direction. What's in their mind? Are they wandering aimlessly as I currently am? It was a Sunday after all...
Minutes of walking at different paces and people-watching got me to Ayala Museum's free admission exhibit, MindScapes. I get giddy whenever I see art so I went inside the gallery after seeing that I still have ample time to take things slowly. And did I say it's for frrrreee?!
The exhibit is running from June 3 - October 29, 2023, and it features select work from Pilipinas Shell's National Student Art Competition Winners. At the time of typing this post, I wonder where's the rest of the collection stored. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation donated these works to Ayala Museum and they even have a catalogue for sale in Ayala Museum's shop.
There were different types of art in the exhibit and they fell under certain categories - watercolor, oil/acrylic, and sculpture. All a sight for sore eyes.
The first set that greeted me was these watercolor paintings. I had to come closer to the second piece as the details were so intricate and my mind can't wrap around the fact that watercolor was used on it. (I have no idea how people can manipulate watercolor, really...) Bais' Transfiguration intrigued me among the three. Is it the canvas size? Is it the controlled mess?
Onto more intriguing pieces... I stared at Agas for a long time. For context, agas means miscarriage in Filipino. I'm unsure if I should correlate it with abortion. What's with this, though? Is it right to assume that the fetus is being pulled out from the body? Look at the hands and feet too... What's the risk of them falling apart? Pardon me, my thoughts are so abstract and so technical at the same time.
There was not much of a crowd as it was a rainy afternoon. Everyone else was probably busy thinking about what's for dinner or how shall they be spending their evening in the malls. The people looking around the gallery though were pretty interested in the displays. Some were even having a discussion; exchanging theories of how were the pieces created and/or trading thoughts and feelings about the subject in front of them. The overheard conversations made me wish I had a gallery buddy with me too, but hey, solo adventures are nice too.
One of the perks of being alone is having all the time to study each piece. And I definitely took my sweet time! I snapped close-up details, took videos of some sculptures, and allowed myself to just be in the moment with my racing thoughts - and the lack of them.
I've yet to decide if I want to upload the videos I took since they're merely reference videos for what knows what would I even do in the coming days but let me share some of the close-ups I have in my phone!
There's absolutely more to see from this exhibit but I like being quite a tease so I'll leave you curious for more! I might actually do another visit so I want to relive the moment and maybe collect some discoveries/realizations that I didn't have from the first one.
Do you like hanging around art galleries?
