Maybe you've heard of a little band called Boston and recall a line in their song Rock & Roll Band
Dancin' in the streets of Hyannis
Well here it is...Hyannis, Massachusetts.
It was a bit of a nostalgia walk. When I moved to Cape Cod with my aunt, some 26 or so years ago, we rented a room just on the border of Hyannisport. But the land of the Kennedys didn't offer a whole lot when you needed to buy food or a sweatshirt.
Main street has of course changed over the years, looking much more inviting, with the addition of fancy street lamps and benches...and even some trash cans! OOhhh.
Yesterday, after a few days of spring, we were thrust back into 25 degree weather! Makes for a pretty sky but a cold walk.
I chose a wig, over a hat and scarf, as I was meeting my friends for an early lunch.
We were meeting at a place called Columbo's. An Italian restaurant, in case their delivery truck doesn't make that clear.
I got to town early to take a little stroll, as it has been a long time since I've wandered the main street when it's not overrun by tourists.
This metal statue is usually surrounded by a crowd. It sits in front of a souvenir shop, facing it's twin.
I think most people visiting Cape Cod will buy a shirt of some sort. Cape Cod Sweat & Tee was where I bought my first Cape Cod gear: a pair of green shorts. We poked our heads in this shop when our mothers came to visit, all those years ago. I went in recently during a visit from my in-laws, as well, and it was quite a shock. The building itself has been improved but now instead of a warehouse full of piles of sweatshirts and what not, there are shoplifting detectors at the door and one way traffic in and out. And of course the prices have greatly increased.
Further down my memory lane stroll, I headed back towards the restaurant and my car. By now I was starting to feel the cold numbing my feet.
There's a tattoo parlor (THE cape cod premier parlor) that wasn't there back then. The Daily Paper is a well known and highly recommended place. When we first moved out here it was called 'Perry's' and we would go in, split a muffin and each have a cup of coffee and spend a fair amount of time taking up space. It was a splurge for us to go out, so splitting a muffin was how we made it work.
I wandered down to the yellow building that used to be a bagel shop. My aunt worked there for a spell, I was just there for the maple walnut cream cheese. More 'breakfast/lunch' food, as that seems to be what Main Street is all about now. I don't recall if it was yellow back then.
A little farther down the road is my favorite vintage shop, Plush and Plunder.
Maybe overpriced, but such fun vintage stuff. I bought a great sequined dress there for my vow renewal in Vegas. It was expensive but totally worth it.
Everything was closed, as it was an early meet up with friends. Plus it's dead of winter still, here, as far as visitors are concerned.
I hope you enjoyed this little nostalgic (for me) walk down main street, for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay
