Recently, I was able to explore Savannah, Georgia. I love America and our history, and seeing it in person is amazing. I loved the homes here. They were a different style in downtown Savannah than those of the plantation houses that you can see outside city limits and in other areas of the south. The first picture that I posted shows one of the pretty houses, but also take a look at those trees. The area is filled with live oak that has moss hanging down, but in this picture, there are two small trees that have the most beautiful blooms. I don't yet know what type they are, but one day, I will have some in my front yard. They are so beautiful to me. They are like full flowers that are growing on trees and not in bushes or on vines. I love them.
A couple of the homes we passed were listed from the late 1700s. One was from 1791, but most were from the 1800s.
We started looking at houses in the afternoon and then made our way down to the River Walk. It was accessed by incredibly old and steep stairs. This led to the cobblestone street. It is amazing how long it has been there. A few hundred years has passed on those streets. Oh, the stories they could tell. They sold slaves off of these streets. So much history, good and bad.
Along the River Walk are a lot of shops, bars, and restaurants. We stopped at one to use the restroom and there were cobblestones inside of it as well. There are newer shops as well, and I stopped to take a picture of the antler light fixture in one of the restaurants.
After walking up and down the River Walk, we looked at some more houses. Night time came on us quickly, but we still took a few pics. A lot of the houses had 3 and 4 stories.
In Savannah, they have gardens in the midst of the city blocks. There are 14 of them. The city is laid out in a very organized way and is quite beautiful. It is rumored that the Union Army didn't destroy much of Savannah because of the beauty of the city.
I could spend a couple of days there just taking in all the sights and reading all the historical information, but we only had 1 afternoon. There was a trolley tour that you could take where you could hop on and off the trolley to see the sights of downtown. We will probably do that next time in addition to taking in some of the food in the area.
