Hi all πŸ‘‹πŸ»

1e400858_1229_41e3_8309_ebc833e38a40

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk challenge and Make me Smile challenge. That are hosted by @tattoodjay and @elizacheng every week on Wednesday.

‼️Have a look: Here in the Wednesday Walk Community if you want to join in! or at @tattoodjay ’s Post here: Wednesday Walk On the harbor walk, shots other than birds ;)
It tells you also the rules of joining at the end of his post 😁

Today will be a rather different walk, I show you a walk around a #cemetery / graveyard in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
THE GREYFRIARS KIRKYARD in EDINBURGH

With graves /names that #inspired JK Rowling into creating her #characters in her #books in the series of HARRY POTTER.

Photos are all taken with my iPhone on 13 April 2022

The location of this graveyard on Google maps you find here, see the yellow star ⭐️ :
365afcc6_3570_4724_9a66_a652ac3ed046

A closer look at Google maps reveals the following names, for ease I highlighted them for you:
4d06c581_5b57_4dd3_b277_7eb216f506ff
The exact location, you have to wander around for. As they are not correctly shown on Google maps. πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜‰

The following screenshot from Google maps of the graveyard mentions:
d025b1d9_9c0f_4a42_8b96_d4981f792120

Information about the graveyard you find Here in Wikipedia!

It states:
”Burials have been taking place since the late 16th century, and a number of notable Edinburgh residents are interred at Greyfriars.”

”Greyfriars takes its name from the Franciscan friary on the site (the friars of which wear grey habits), which was dissolved in 1560. The churchyard was founded in August 1562 after Royal sanction was granted to replace the churchyard at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.”

About J.K. Rowling;
More information about the connection between the writer and this graveyard you can find : In this website!

Let’s have a look around now:

Entering we see a large field of grass and graves in the distance…
0ae83848_307c_49b6_8f45_a72b9be79137

In search of the β€œfamous names” I look around corners and see interesting structures, shadows around the graves.
f7c08e08_6e6e_4a61_89b7_7821cd7a70cb

Every grave in this graveyard is so different. Their styles… the age… somehow, I do love wandering around graveyards. As sometimes the structures are just stunning, just alone from an architectural perspective πŸ€“πŸ˜Ž depicting different eras.
b8684b35_3559_41c6_8a7c_612c953b2461

Looking at the details… the work that went into them. Nothing like you see nowadays.
701008d8_1d3e_4f18_a417_1bcf8ff4d710

Fascinating πŸ€“
93132361_fd27_4451_af47_f2d42fd6ef52
They tell stories…

The location on Google maps show us here is one of the graves we are looking for… but nothing is there. It must be on the other side of this wall somewhere.
e9596ed8_87f7_4233_9ef4_2682dd440be5
So walking all the way around, trying to aim for the same direction…

Yes, I found the first name on our list to visit.
51baf767_5924_4d86_8179_cd7232afa4e0

Here we see the grave of THOMAS RIDDLE- Lord Voldemort himself 😎

df6c1f21_1e1d_4c0c_9f02_7c4505a96f80
The first character out of the novels from J.K. Rowling in the series of HARRY POTTER that we are looking for.

Let’s see if we can find the other ones too. πŸ˜πŸ’ƒπŸ» And we walk further around.

Passing by this rather large grave.
a0b720ba_bc8a_47f0_9cf8_5ed31031a7b6
I went with Black and White here. As it so fitted better the mood.

One in colour… it was a cold but dry day in Edinburgh Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 this morning. So the colours are rather pale.
74bb8e98_6cc8_42a8_9a29_6612fe8780a7

A little bit further.
Yes… we find number 2 on our list.
11a14dc6_3837_40d0_992e_e9fce836bac8
Here we see McGONAGALL it is not the exact location of the grave but more a tombstone.

It states:
”I am your Gracious Majesty
ever faithful to Thee,
William McGonagall, The Poor Poet,
That lives in Dundee.
W McG 6th Sept, 1877”

As we walk further I notice this grave, two figures praying. So many details, but most are weathered.
3c9c4341_a9ec_4a01_bb6b_f7e8b85eb1ef

We see some separated graves, behind walls with gates. Some are open and I peak inside.
74f0fe85_71a1_4b7f_a4d5_8b1949688c2a
Again here the Black and White photography fitted much better. 😎

And we found another name on our list.
15ff8c36_a84c_4715_ad83_cab02bad7cc8
Here we see this grave, where ELIZABETH MOODIE is the spouse of James Baird and it mentions their 3 daughters.

Let’s wander further… as there is still much more to see.

Peaking inside another grave separated by walls and gates I notice this wall…
eed6f093_1452_4eb8_b5af_09184919884b

And the grave in front of it.
05d0ae2d_5ded_429e_b2fd_6b4adbea61a5

A little bit further I see a elaborate grave… so much inside of that little area. The columns… the details.
2799b40a_b67c_4dd8_a32b_08f2057add30

Zooming out we see even more. Statues on top.
3e73cee6_8651_41d1_9422_c10da3eb0c72

If you look closely to the figure… I believe I see two heads. One is lying in front of it and the head from the statue looks almost like a skull to me.
88fc563e_3492_4eb0_afb0_c968e699b68a

The side inscriptions.
f52dccf0_6326_48f0_9e4d_25eba65d7d7a

And a plaque on the gate.
e1f2ba98_b484_4d51_b8b3_507c90648c4e
It states:
”What Clement was, how great that Little were
This citizens, that Bibliotheck declare.
This noble pair of brethren did contend
In merits great, each other to transcend
For both did good: This to the mother town
That to the muses; whence came their renown.”

It captivated me…

I know there were 2 more graves with the name Potter and the name that inspired Rufus Scrimgeour - Louisa Scrymgeour Wedderburn.
But I didn’t find those… next time πŸ˜‰

As we are walking down the hill and just before we leave the graveyard we see the statue of this dog.
6d3672eb_0e01_4d1f_a7f8_1e6540c71066

Zooming out a bit.
02aa45b6_145c_40f8_a568_4aeecfa29a73
It is a memorial for the dog Bobby, which is said; he sat for 14 years at his owners grave… and died in 1872.

You find more information about him In this website!
It’s fascinating to read up on it, so don’t skip this part 😁

And that’s all for today!
Until next time 😎
Hope you enjoyed my photos of this walk around the graveyard and going along with me to see the names of characters from JK Rowling. Thank you for looking and reading 😊 πŸ™πŸ» Really much appreciated!

Any questions or comments, let me know. Always happy to help.
Have a great Wednesday all 😎

I did not know this information dear friend @littlebee4, I never thought that the characters of the famous series were related to a cemetery
I love tombstones and architecture, it is what catches my attention when I visit a cemetery

I take this opportunity to wish you a great day

Hello my friend @jlufer good day to you too πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜β˜€οΈ

Most people don’t know, so it is nice to be able to share this information.
Looks like we all enjoy wandering cemeteries πŸ˜ŽπŸ€“ they are just fascinating, and sometimes, like here, you find interesting facts.
I knew that these graves where here before my visit to Scotland. So it was great to see it than.
Have a wonderful day too πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

cemeteries have their own charm, I like to visit my relatives and then read the tombstones, there are interesting readings in it
Have a beautiful morning

They do @jlufer πŸ€“
Interesting reads from times long gone.
Thanks a lot, you too my friend πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

So cool with the harry Potter names coming from there, I walked through there quickly probably 25 years ago and didnt know of the Harry Potter tie o]in or hadnt seen any of the movies perhaps

the detail in the headstones is amazing

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

It sure is @tattoodjay 😎 pretty cool. Great to hear you been there.
Think probably the latter, as that was just before they came out… πŸ˜‰

So much to see there, all the details.
Thanks for visiting, happy to share as always πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜Žβ˜€οΈ
Enjoy your day further!

It just came to me that the reason I visited that area was to see the GReyfriars statue, I had read about it in a book at some stage

Aha… cool. Yes, this place sure has some history. Many books are formed around it. πŸ˜ŽπŸ€“

Ohh yes indeed, I remember Edinburgh being mentioned or visited in many books i have read

It is rather a remarkable city. The history there is vast. I saw a lot on our trip there but not even 25% of it actually πŸ˜πŸ€“ I like cities that have so much to tell… beautiful.

OHh yes I love cities like that also, I know we inherently want to see everything, but keeps the mystery to a city when we know we havent seen it all :)

And that is the fun part of it. When visiting a big city… I leave in purpose things out, we don’t go to see. Even if they are major attractions. It keeps the mystery going.
Tonight we fly to Paris for 5 days… ✈️
I don’t want to see it all. Hahaha 🀣 just having a good time, and go off the beaten track. Not to all the busy spots where all the tourists are. πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ˜ we will see… we’re we end up πŸ˜‰

It is a memorial for the dog Bobby, which is said; he sat for 14 years at his owners grave… and died in 1872.

This is similar to the story of Hachiko, the Japanese Akita inu (inu=dog).

Hachiko have multiple films. Hachiko Monogatari (monogatari=tale) (1987) and Hachiko: A Dog's Story (2009). The first film is Japanese. The second film is American. Bobby also have one. Greyfriars Bobby (1961). This is also an American movie.

If you have not saw them, then I would gladly recommend watching them. I love these kinds of stories.

Yes, I read more about Bobby and knew he had movies. It is interesting to see these kind of movies @xplosive 😎 didn’t know about Hachiko but remember reading that name somewhere.
If I have time one day I will watch them. Thanks for that information, much appreciated!
Have a wonderful day today πŸ‘‹πŸ» Greetings and much love from Spain.

That is fascinating! I had no idea they too those names straight out of the cemetery! I love cemetery walks in general, they are so interesting and history is unfolded right before your very eyes.

Great pictures! I love the mono! J.K. Rowling is pure genius!

Thank you so much Denise 😁
I noticed not many people were aware of that. So it’s great I could share this.
I do too, as there are so many stories to be told and to discover. So interesting. The old ones are just so beautiful and can make for some awesome moody photographs. I love moody photographs 😎

She sure was a genius πŸ₯°πŸ’ƒπŸ»
Have a wonderful day further.
I’m so busy today, will comment later on the walk posts πŸ˜‰

Always peaceful a walk in a cemetery... Beautiful pics with all these different graves. And I didn't know about the inspiration behind the names of the Harry Potter characters, cool to know

Yes, it is… peaceful. Such a different atmosphere. 😎
Thank you so much @heroldius 😁 happy to share my discoveries and adventures.
Have a wonderful midweek πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

There is something wonderful about walking around a graveyard and sharing the space with the past. Melancholic and serene and they are always such tranquil places.

Greyfriars Kirkyard is actually more well known for someone else though rather than JK Rowling and Harry Potter...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greyfriars_Bobby

A really interesting read :-)

Great photos and I hope you're having an amazing week.

Thank you so much @nathen007 πŸ˜πŸ‘‹πŸ»
Yes, I know… that’s why I included the last 2 photograph of Bobby and this exact link already in my post. But I wanted to highlight the JK Rowling bit more, as most don’t know that. πŸ˜‰

So far it is going great… Friday I will be off to Paris for 5 days ✈️ Yay… can’t wait πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»
Have a wonderful day and week too!

What an idiot ! I looked through all the pictures and the last two stood out ofr the use of the V instead of the U! I'm on my phone and I struggle to see details as my eyes are bad. Sorrryyyyy! I do look at everything and was purposefully looking for Greyfriars Bobby as its a favourite story of mine!
Paris? Awesome, but watch out for the pickpockets lol

No worries… πŸ˜πŸ˜‰ phone screens are small. I either use my laptop or iPad. Because… yep… eyes are not that good anymore hahaha lol

Yes, I saw that too the V instead of the U. Well picked up on. πŸ€“πŸ˜Ž maybe I should have highlighted a bit more under the last photo. Will keep it in mind. Because it is an amazing story.

Yes… Paris… here we come.
Is it that bad there? The pickpockets… @nathen007 I keep reading about it.
I have been to Rome, there is it bad too and people pushing things in your hands… we could luckily deal with it.

Impressive! The Harry Potter books took me a bit too old to read, but I've seen all the films in the saga. I didn't know that J.K. Rowling had taken the names of the characters based on real people... dead!

Cemeteries are places I'm both attracted to and afraid of, but I like to walk through them so I don't forget that life is fleeting.

Thank you for these beautiful and evocative images. πŸ€—

I understand the too old to read the books @palomap3 πŸ€“
Apparently this isn’t comes knowledge I discovered. So I’m happy to share this 😎

Yes, it is great to experience the β€œlife is fleeting” part. As it is rather fast sometimes. A cemetery can be grounding again. It makes you β€œstop” for a moment.
You are welcome, happy to share.
Thank you so much! Have a wonderful midweek πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

Very cool. Love old cemeteries. Thanks for that vtour.

Thank you @ksteem 😎
Me too, especially old ones like this one.
You are welcome. Have a wonderful midweek πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜Š

Ow, I like cemeteries hahaha

It looks a bit scary, perfect!! :D

Me too @mipiano 😎

It does a little bit, it wasn’t early enough for more moody photos. But the weather helped.
Thanks πŸ‘‹πŸ» Have a great evening!

Here we see the grave of THOMAS RIDDLE- Lord Voldemort himself 😎

Woooowowowow. Goosebumps. Scotland? I heard amazing fairy tales about Scotland. I am speechless littlebee. Great post really. Specially because of Voldemort. I like Harry Potter sooo much. Is there a place on mother earth where you was not by the way? πŸ˜…πŸ˜πŸ’―πŸŒŽ In my mind, you know a aaaaall places on earth!!! Full respect. Wow. Just wow. Have a relaxed evening. I will watch some of the pics in your post again. πŸŒƒπŸŽΆπŸŽΆπŸŽΆπŸŽΆ

Yeah!!! You like them too… me too πŸ€“πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ a little β€œus” dance now πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸŽ΅πŸŽΆπŸŽ΅πŸŽΆ
Thanks so much @akida πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»
Yep, many many places left. Don’t think I will see everything that is on my list to visit… Indy’s and Lara’s list… but sure I will try. Until the last moment. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š I love traveling, adventures, experiences…
I will, thank you. You do the same πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜πŸ’ƒπŸ» Biggg huggg πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ

Thank you kindly @palomap3 😁 I will…
You too!

Was it intentional that you went in search for Harry Potter characters? :D I haven't been able to explore graveyards although I pass by public cemetery all the time during my walks. However, I haven't noticed intricate tombstones such as presented here.

Yes it was. I knew of the existence of the graves and names @leeart 😎 but I also like to wander around in the graveyards especially old ones like this. So it covered both intentions.
Newer cemeteries don’t tend to have elaborate tombstones anymore. Maybe look if there are old ones in your area and have a look. It’s cool to explore 😎
Have a wonderful day today πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

I'm not that optimistic that I'd find one but I'll try :D

Great let me know if you do 😁😎

Sure thing!

Cool 😎

that is a nice graveyard, got to admit, I too love a wander through the past, nicely done uploads

Thanks @grindle 😎 that’s great to hear. These old ones just have something special… and so much to see… fascinating they are.
Have a wonderful day today πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

πŸ‘

I Love to walk cemeteries, graveyards, tombs, catacombs etc and when I travel I often find the graveyards and churches and see what's what. The people's past are always writ on such places, really magical @littlebee4

Thank you so much @donnadavisart 😁
Yes, I do the same… they are fascinating and magical at the same time. Especially the old ones.
Have a great Thursday!

I didn’t know that a graveyard was the source of characters’ names in Harry Potter. I can’t even imagine how you felt being there. Wow!

It was truly magical being there… @philomenob 🀩🀩
Glad I could share this information with you.
Have a wonderful Wednesday πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈ

Have an awesome day today πŸ‘‹πŸ»β˜€οΈπŸ

Wow interesting Harry Potter trivia. I didn't know about the graveyard being a source for character names. Kind of odd to think of the new found fame for these people that lived years ago. And great photos by the way. Cemetaries are very interesting. Nice to have a reason (excuse lol) to photograph them πŸ™‚

It sure is interesting to know. And just imagine the fame these people get now after their death.
It’s a shame not more people realise or even know.
I like wandering over graveyards. They are peaceful in an odd way.
Especially wandering the old ones, the details of the stones and graves. It fascinates me.
And this is indeed a great excuse to visit this graveyard. It’s a beautiful one. Right in the middle of the historical centre of Edinburgh.
Thanks @steven-patrick πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜
