A Mother and her child pottering along the entrance road into Silvermine Nature Reserve in the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town.
In the southern peninsula of Cape Town (where I live.) and actually the whole of South Africa we are incredibly fortunate to have an innumerable number of beautiful coastal, mountain, forest & bushveld walks and hikes.
Today I am going concentrate on a walk/hike from Silvermine nature reserve to Elephants Eye cave. Both of these fall in the Table Mountain National Park.
A view of a very small part of the Silvermine dam on a stormy day.
The Park covers an area of 221 square kilometres (86 square miles.)
One of the biggest reasons for the Park is to protect it's diverse & unique Fynbos floral kingdom which occurs in many coastal regions of South Africa. This is included as part of the UNESCO Cape floral region world heritage site.
This post isn't intended to be about Fynbos but amazingly enough, as I am writing this I have just seen that a great South African Hiver, @julianhorack, has just written an interesting & informative blog about Fynbos. It is a great read and can be seen at https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@julianhorack/protecting-the-rare-indigenous-fynbos-floral-kingdom-at-robberg-coastal-corridor-south-africa.
The boardwalk leading from the carpark at Silvermine as one begins the hike to Elephants Eye cave.
It is a roughly 8 kilometre (5 mile) moderate loop hike that takes 3-5 hours and offers amazing views across False Bay and the Cape Peninsula.
A local dragon suntanning along the way.
Views along the route with my hometown seaside village of Muizenberg in the background at the foot of the mountain......a 10-15 minute drive away.
The entrance to Elephants Eye cave
From a distance this piece of the side the of mountain looks like the side of an Elephants head and the cave is right where the Elephants eye would be.....hence the name "Elephants Eye cave."
The view from inside the cave looking back towards False Bay.
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed my walk with me.

I am doing this blog as part of the #wednesdaywalk challenge and #makemesmile collaboration created by @tattoo-djay and @elizacheng. Thanks for what both of you do.
