A Gloomy Day in Lagos City (2)

Goodday Hivers .
So today i decided to paint Lagos, the city that never rests, and it is brought to life in this atmospheric painting, where the interplay of rain, lights, and movement captures the raw essence of its streets. The painting celebrates the dynamic energy of Lagos, portraying a scene where yellow buses (danfos) weave through reflective puddles beneath the towering facades of the city.

THE PROCESS AND MEDIUM

This piece was created using acrylic on canvas, chosen for its versatility and boldness in delivering the vivid hues of Lagos life. The process began with a loose sketch of the cityscape, focusing on composition and balance. Using a palette knife and large brushes, layers of bold strokes were added, alternating between textures to mimic the roughness of Lagos streets and the softness of the rain’s effect.

The background, a hazy blend of blues and browns, was built with multiple layers of diluted paint to give it depth, as if the buildings are disappearing into the mist. The vibrant yellows and oranges of the danfos were added with short, energetic brushstrokes, contrasting against the deep shadows of the surrounding structures.

For the wet streets, glazing techniques were used to create the reflections, employing thin layers of paint to mimic the slickness of rain-soaked asphalt. Each streak and highlight was carefully placed to guide the viewer’s eye along the busy Lagos road, capturing the essence of motion and life.

THE INSPIRATION

The painting was inspired by a typical rainy day in Lagos—a day when the rain doesn’t stop the hustle, but instead transforms the city into a reflective, almost poetic version of itself. It’s a tribute to the resilience and vibrancy of Lagosians, who navigate the chaos with grace and determination.

Whether you’ve walked these streets or only heard the stories, this piece draws you into the rhythm of Lagos, inviting you to embrace the beauty in its organized chaos.
