I've recently become really interested in stories from the Edo period. It all started when I came across Hokusai, and then I found myself watching YouTube videos about the history of Japan, which got me even more hooked. While I was looking for anime to watch, I stumbled upon "Ooku: The Inner Chamber," which had just been uploaded. After watching the first episode, I was hooked. I love the gender role reversal in the series, it's great to see women as the protagonists or favored characters. I'm not hating on men, 😅 but it's just refreshing to see women taking the lead, especially in a Japanese historical setting.
The series starts with men dying from a disease and men serving as concubines to the female shogun inside the walls of the Ooku or more like harem of the shogun 😏 nyahaha It's really interesting, don't you think?
The story became more exciting the more I watched it. I even wondered if it really happened in real life. Not the gender reversal though but more of the story that was happening before, like killing for an absurd reason. but given by the history of japan, well it most likely happen, like where do these writers gets the reference right? so yeah, i answered my own question 😆, anyways I love the drawing, the kimonos, everything! I also kind of got surprised by the sudden sex scenes. HAHAHA! 🤣 I'm just glad no one walked in on me while I watched it.
The twist at the end of the show left me unsatisfied to the point that I craved more episodes. I still need more answers, and I hope they give the show a season 2. There wasn't any information back then that they'd put a season 2 on it, but I just recently learned from someone on Reddit that it will be aired this coming October! Which is very soon! I'm excited to see how the Shogun women would act during those times.
If you happen to be into historical anime drama, this is a highly recommended anime.
