Formally, I always wished to be like everyone I see that's better than me in the music industry and life in general. But then, with time, I got to realize that music is all about one's uniqueness and not a competition. Many of us are always wanting to sound like someone we look up to and be like them at the end. Which is never a healthy thing to do as a musician.
It looks more like you're limiting yourself if you ask me. Rather than trying to be like a person musical, why not explore and also be unique by doing something different from what every other person is doing? Be it a competition or something, always learn to be creative, learn to know what you want to sound like, have the understanding of it, grow in it, and also, learn to be a unique person in all.
I love it when someone thinks outside the box and does something that's different from what every other person is doing. Like in my country, Nigeria, there's this guy named Rema who literally started thinking outside the box and learned to be unique in his own space and not copy anyone.
He's kind of music was more like an Indian kind of music. People literally did complain a lot. But guess what? He never stopped being him; he never went astray because he knew deep down what he wanted for himself. Did he get a lot of discouragement from people and insults for his style of music? Yes.
But regardless of all of that, he never gave up. And guess who is cashing out big and being the trending man on the list right now? Still this same guy many people condemned. I'm not even going to lie; I was also among the list of people who condemned his kind of music.
But then, my opinion was not needed in the long run, and it never for once stopped him from doing him. We shouldn't let people's opinions matter or define our lives. Try to always know what you want for yourself and work hard towards achieving just that.
Everyone is literally very good in their own space and field. I don't advise any upcoming instrumentalist or vocalist to want to be like a role model or someone they look up to. Learning to discover yourself fast and being unique will literally help you go far and grow better.
This guy's unique music literally earned him $3 million from his last performance at one of the top richest man's daughter's wedding in India. And it's so funny how this guy's music that was being talked down on during those times is now on the top list with a massive streaming count. Which means a whole lot of money for him.
In Summary
Always learn to be you, and never for once let people's opinions matter in your journey in life. Be a unique musician, know what you want to sound like, and also be specific about what you want for yourself. Never follow the crowd to do the regular thing. Trust the process, stay out of competition, pray, believe, and see the result you get at last.
