Jin | Oni Collection #8

Jin

My mind: How much red does this illustration need?
My hand in Photoshop : Yes

Happy Friday! the weekend is here, and with it comes a new Oni for the collection, the previous one I published six days ago, so they are almost in the same week, does this mean that I can almost make two Onis in a few days? hopefully someday I can make good drawings faster, it is my greatest wish.

Jin is the new Oni of this collection, her name means "tenderness or gentleness" and that's why I drew her a soft and peaceful face that would make you feel comfortable and calm by her side, just like the Shima Enaga that pose on her arm, these are small Japanese birds that look like beautiful cotton balls, look for them in Google to make you fall in love and make your day just by looking at them ❤️

🔰Process🔰

-Step 1:

For days I had this desire to make a Japanese bridge, and is that many times I draw everything freehand and there are few things that I define perfectly from the sketch, so I took this bridge as a challenge, so I was sketching it again and again until I got it correctly placed in the perspective of Jin.

-Step 2:

My first color choice was a cool color palette, but I had already used that same color temperature in the two previous Onis, and since the meaning of Jin's name is so cozy, I decided to make a change to warmer tones that would harmonize with the bridge.

-Step 3:

The new yellow and red tones were fine, but now what didn't fit or was going to lose focus as I was detailing would be the dress, so I applied a color that I almost never use for clothes, black, and it was a good decision, because it immediately matched with the golden edges.

-Step 4:

Also to avoid a boring or too dark black on the dress, again I wanted to experiment with prints on the fabric, this time I used some patterns to cover larger areas, and of course some nice flowers were ideal against the dark background of the dress.

And as always, I painted over the line to detail without very sharp edges, although I liked the lines of the bridge so much that I didn't want to cover them up. 😅

-Step 5:

You thought I was not going to do the tattoo (although you already knew that there was going to be one when you saw the main image), but I had to say something before talking about today's design, this time I have gone for something very simple, with some flowers that adorn the whole arm, and I did not want to give so much prominence or contrast to the tattoo for two reasons, 1. the light would be right on the tattooed arm and therefore I could not make it too dark because it would clash with the lighting that I had already applied and 2. because right on the other arm would be the birds and I wanted you to focus the view on these beautiful cotton balls 😍

I will leave you a GIF with the whole process on it, so you can better appreciate the illustration process.

The first thing I thought about when I saw this drawing…

“this character could be in a Disney movie.”

I think it's because of the birds :) Great work @hadley4.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but a Japanese Disney princess would be great 🤗
