Queen Aife of the Dekai

in #hive-1586942 years ago

Hello HIVE! In this post, I would like to introduce Queen Aife of the Dekai. This is actually fanart of Fell Dragon which is authored by @lex-zaiya. I really enjoy her writing and I have the privilege of receiving her writing in advance as one of her "guinea readers". This means she gets to ask me all sorts of difficult questions, such as what my favourite parts are. This is like asking me what block of chocolate of the slab was my favourite. Dude, I love the whole slab!

Now Aife has not officially been introduced in the story that has been posted here on HIVE, but I could simply not help myself. I enjoyed meeting her and her personality is, well, awesome. I was also overly excited as she is the wife of a character I had first met (and loved) in @lex-zaiya's first published work Seeking a Prince.

Now I could go on and on, but, spoilers sweetie. So I will simply state that Aife is a Dekai. And if you want to know more about them, this post, Fell Dragon Races will give you information. Too lazy to click there? Well, physically, Dekai are grey to black-skinned, elf-like creatures, with bat-like wings. They usually keep their wings folded and close to their back. With most Dekai, the wings are vestigial and cannot be used to fly. There are some exceptions though Aife is one of them. Aife is from a warrior family which is why she is wearing armour. Her family or house colour is black.

If you want to read about her, then you had better go catch up on Fell Dragon. Aife has not made her debut there yet, so you have time to get up to date.

And without further gushing over @lex-zaiya's writing, let's get to the process of how I did this piece!

The Process

As always, I start with a rough sketch. Aife is a warrior and I took a lot of inspiration from Brienne of Tarth in terms of armour. Her hair is a little bit on the wild side so after some discussion with @lex-zaiya a faux-hawk was decided upon as the best hairstyle reference.

After the sketch, I got to work with the line art, cleaning everything up.

Then it was time to add the base colours. Grey skin, emerald green eyes, and midnight blue hair. In the fourth panel, you can see the combination of line art and base colours.

The next step was to start adding the shadows. I laughed hard as Aife looked a little bit like a goth panda after this step. You can also see I decided to alter some of the base colours at this point, specifically the undercoat of the armour.

Then I started adding in the highlights. Her armour being metal had harder highlights than for example her skin. I also added the pupils and the base lip colour.

Even more highlights in the hair in the next step. I also added a lot more detail to her eyes and lips to give them a bit more life. Some subtle pink blush helped to pull her skin together nicely. I began trying to figure out what I was going to do with the background.

In the last panel, I finally settled on the colour I was going to use for the background. I started touching up and deepening a lot of the shadows to add extra depth to the picture overall.

Some back glow and some border grunge, along with a lot of really tiny touch-ups, leaves us with the final piece. Queen Aife of the Dekai, who is currently contemplating if she should kick your butt.

Thanks

This turned out really cool. I will have to check out the source material. Thanks for sharing. You made the personality of this character palpable with your art. Great job!

Oh wow, thank you so much for the kind comment! The source material is definitely worth a read, @lex-zaiya is a great writer and I easily lose myself in her stories. I lost 3 or 4 days when she sent me her work because I did nothing but read and woe to the person that tried to interrupt me!

I tried to capture Aife as best as I could manage and your comment means more than you realize!

Nice

Thank you!

the detail in the colour is very well done 😄and the eyes have such depth.

That you so much! She was a lot of fun to illustrate.

Collaboration all across the nation! Brilliant work!

@lex-zaiya's writing has always inspired me. This is not my first fan art for her, and likely not my last. Hehehe

Awesome work as always! My favourite is seeing the process and transformation 🥰

Thank you! It can be quite interesting, though sometimes when you look at one of the in-between stages without having seen the result they can look weird. When doing a more realistic painterly style some of the stages can look downright terrifying. A face out of a nightmare!

Very very true!!

Super lovely one. Well done.

Thank you so much! She was a lot of fun to illustrate!

Damn it...why can't I like twice? I love how you brought Aife to life! Thanks so much Sam.

You are so welcome! And thank you for sharing your writing with me! 💓❤️💓

I need someone to bounce ideas off of!

I love it - you've got a serious talent there !

Also, I really like that you've gone down a realistic route with the armour. Too often, fantasy armour worn by ladies is more boobplate than breastplate, which isn't just silly and sexist, it's downright dangerous. Plate armour is supposed to deflect blows safely, and having most blows to the chest deflected onto the sternum is lethal from the impact alone even if it doesn't go through the armour. But I should probably get out of anorak mode now.... 😉

And if I may interject, Aife hates them as well! She has a larger breast plate for obvious reasons, but none of the molded crap.

It might sound counter-intuitive but unless she's a total mutant she shouldn't need a larger breastplate, and may even need a smaller one. I've spent far more years than I care to admit doing re-enactment, and although most of it is Napoleonic, re-enactors here in the UK are a pretty close-knit community so I've had plenty of opportunity to talk to medieval/HEMA participants, including the ladies who join the fun. When it comes to plate armour, there's a huge amount of padded clothing (gambeson, arming doublet or similar) under the metal, as well as space to breathe, move and sweat (soooo much sweat....). Most of the ladies I've spoken to use standard plate, but on the smaller side unless they've got man-sized shoulders and torso.

Fair enough. I'll have to consider that when I get to the point of describing her armour better. At this point I just described it as armour, no male or female description added to it.

That is pretty interesting!
Can't help but shudder with the amount of sweat involved and knowing they didn't have the convenient plumbing systems we do today! Haha

Oh my gosh! @alonicus you are a kindred spirit! That boobplate crap annoys the hell out of me! It completely defeats the entire purpose of armour! Not to mention, Aife would maul me if I depicted her in that.

Thank you so much for the kind words!

Great work!!!

Thank you!
