Hey everyone!
I'm back with the third day's installation in the series.
Not every day will have our protagonist dealing with darkness and danger, some days will just be simple days on the island... in some cases... when the RNG of Wusang has it's way... even an ordinary day can turn into something extraordinary :)
Enjoy!
Day 3
Mara and I were both weary after our encounter with the spiders, so Dirk assigned us to some lighter duty today. We were to comb some of the beaches that hadn't been visited in a while for any lost treasures.
The day was largely uneventful, other than finding some interesting shells and sea creatures as we combed the beaches.
While sifting some beach sand in hopes of getting lucky, I thought back to the events of the previous day. I turned to Mara and asked if she could teach me how to defend myself better. I told her I noticed the skill with which she handled her knife and wanted to learn how to defend myself in case I ran into any more trouble on the island.
Mara agreed to teach me, and we spent the rest of the day practicing knife techniques.
"You've got a long way to go to have any hope of being able to defend yourself with just a knife," Mara said. "But it's better than nothing."
As the sun began to set, I noticed a green glint in the sand. My heart raced as I scooped it up, and sure enough, it was an emerald.
"We struck gold!" I said, excitedly showing Mara my find.
"Not quite," she said with a laugh. "But it's a good start."
With night falling, we headed back to camp, excited about the day's find.
Mara was quiet on the walk back, and I could tell she was still shaken up from our encounter with the spiders.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"It's just... the encounters with the darkness of this island seem to be increasing," she said. "While I've never seen those hellish spiders before, I have a feeling it wasn't our last encounter with La Sombra... honestly, I don't even know for sure if those Spiders are even connected to that note we found. But... don't let me drag you down, you just had your first big score on the island. Let's enjoy that while we can. Take the wins where you can get them."
I didn't know what to say, the feeling of the moment was bittersweet. But Mara was right, we needed to take the wins where we could get them. And finding that emerald was a big win.
We continued back to camp in silence, both of us lost in our own thoughts.
Back at the campfire, everyone was in a good mood, sharing stories and laughing. It was a stark contrast to the somber mood Mara and I were in, it was enough to raise my spirits, forgetting the darkness and instead remembering the light and good times of that day.
At the evening campfire meeting, Dirk asked how our day went. Mara said with a smirk, "It was a pretty uneventful day, nothing much to report, except... the fresh fish over here caught himself an emerald."
Everyone's eyes widened at the sight of the jewel, and a murmur went through the group.
Dirk whistled low and said, "Well now, it seems you two had a much more eventful day than the rest of us! That's quite a find!"
He continued... "Looks like drinks are on you tonight, my friend!"
I good-naturedly agreed, and we all enjoyed a celebratory drink around the campfire, toasting to my good fortune. Mara and I shared a smile, knowing that even though the island was dangerous and full of darkness, there was still light to be found there.
