Bees are very important for fruit trees and bushes because they play a crucial role in pollination.
As they move from flower to flower, they transfer pollen. With the pollen from the male flowers they fly to the female flowers and this way they fertilize them resulting in fruits.
Since I have a couple of fruit trees and bushes in my backyard I welcome our little friends with open arms. And not only to fertilize the fruits trees, but also to make some nice marco shots of them.
This weekend I spotted a large number of bumblebees on the fruit trees and my raspberry bush.
Bumblebees are a bit larger and hairier than honeybees. You can the furry 'coat' the one in the photo above is wearing.
At the moment they are all over my raspberry bush. I think there were four or five of them flying from flower to flower. It's quite hard to get a clear and sharp shot of them since they often only sit still for a fraction of a second.
On this shot you can see the bumblebee reaching out to the nectar with its long and curly tongue.
They really are acrobats. When hanging upside down and shaking the flowers the pollen also drop on them. This way they transport them to the other flowers.
I waited patiently near my raspberry bush and my patience was rewarded. Suddenly one of the bumblebees decided to take a rest on a leaf. This gave me the opportunity to get in a bit closer.
It looks a bit lifeless, but when I came even closer it flew away.
Such amazing creatures and important ones as well!
If you have the space, plant some native wild flowers in your area to help these little friends!
