Any job is better than no job?

Looking back on the past decade of my career, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern.

When you're fresh out of college, it’s common to think, "I'll just take this job for now to gain some experience and start searching for something better in a year or two." But then life happens.

You find yourself receiving a promotion in the field you were initially “passionate” about, and you think, "Well, I guess I can stay another year or two and see where this leads." That decision often leads to another milestone or responsibility, and before you know it, you're deeply rooted in that role.

As time passes, you might start to realize, "Wait, I’m not sure I even enjoy this anymore." You try to pivot, only to discover how difficult it is to transition out of the career path you've been climbing. This cycle can leave you feeling stuck in a field you no longer feel connected to.

This is why being intentional about your career choices and the skills you develop at every stage is so crucial. Each role you take on should be seen not just as a job but as an opportunity to both learn and earn. Striking that balance ensures that every experience contributes meaningfully to your growth.

Don’t let passion alone dictate your career trajectory. While passion is important, being strategic with your decisions is what will truly set you up for long-term success. If you don’t make deliberate choices, you risk feeling trapped in a role or industry that no longer aligns with your goals or interests.

Instead of waiting passively for opportunities to come your way, actively shape your career. Focus on building the skills and experience you’ll need to transition into the next role you aspire to. By taking ownership of your professional development, you’ll position yourself to pivot when the time is right and avoid feeling stuck.

Your future self will thank you later.
