*"Mum, I'm ready! Screamed Jasper from his bedroom as he made his way downstairs with a large brown box filled with toys in his hands. Jasper and his mum were moving from the city to the suburbs where they could be closer to nature.
His dad had passed away a year ago and it was his dad's dream to own a house in the suburbs away from the city noise and pollution. His mom had worked hard to make that dream a reality and now they were finally moving. It felt like they could both connect to him by living out the rest of their lives in the very place he wanted.
Jasper's mum took the box from him and put it inside the car boot. She opened the car door for ten year old Jasper and his furry friend Marco. Jasper's dog has been a great companion ever since his dad's demise. They were inseparable.
The drive took about six hours and finally they arrived at their new home. They made it almost to dinner time and so his mum only carried a few things into the house before entering the kitchen to prepare dinner. "We will unpack the remaining stuff tomorrow when Its bright okay" she said to Jasper who simply nodded his head in approval. He was too tired to say anything and slouched unto the sofa. After a quick dinner of ham sandwiches, they all retired to bed.
Morning arrived quite early. Perks of living close to nature. Jasper did his morning routine and then joined his mom in bringing in some stuff from the vehicle into the house. By noon, they were done and being that it was winter season, the snow glistened when you looked at it.
Then Jasper sought permission from his mom to go play at the backyard with Marco. Since she needed time to unpack stuff in peace, she agreed. Jasper "hoorayed" himself as he quickly took Marco along with him to play.
At first, it was a simple game of fetch. Jasper would throw a stick into a distance and Marco would happily go fetch it back. This continued for a while as Jasper kept running farther away from home without his knowing it but he was having so much fun with Marco.
Next, they decided to race into the woods and back. Jasper called Marco to himself with his special signal and then he began to run in the direction of the woods. Marco picked up on what Jasper wanted and began to chase after him, barking happily. They ran for a while, with Jasper picking up speed when he felt like Marco was going to catch up and Marco was doing his best on his tiny limbs.
As they both ran and played in the snow, Jasper didn't realize that there was a hole and he fell into it. Marco was quick to sense something amiss and so he stood by the edge of the hole and barked seriously, waiting for Jasper to come out. Jasper could only reassure him with an "I'm fine Marco", "go get mom". Marco was torn between leaving his friend all alone and going to get help.
He looked up at the sky with his small brown fur face and noticed that the sun was going down. He knew that it would be difficult to locate this place in the dark and so he chose to stay by his friend and offer comfort silently while also hoping that mum would come get both of them. He laid down in the snow filled flow unperturbed.
Like a wish made to a s shooting star, Marco heard footsteps approaching and he began to bark as much as his little mouth could allow. Finally, the footsteps drew closer and it was mom who had come to look for them. Seeing her, Marco barked and jumped happily while wagging its tail. He took mom to the hole where a frightened Jasper was seated. Luckily, she had come with a rope and with that, she pulled Jasper up to the surface.
"I'm so glad you guys are safe" she cried. "Thanks for coming to get us mom" Jasper replied and hugged his mother. As if feeling left out, Marco barked a signal to say "what about me?". Mom bent down, picked Marco up and gave him a wee kiss on his little head. Then she said, "Thank you for staying with Jasper. You are a good friend" to that she got two happy barks in response and then the three of them began to walk back home.
Little Marco saved the day cos no one was left behind.
