My take on Will Smith and Chris Rocks saga

I woke up this morning going about my daily routine. I decided to look up some WhatsApp statuses and saw that the Oscar movie award was yesterday.

After a few seconds, I saw a screenshot saying Chris rock was slapped by will smith.
My first opinion on seeing this was that, it was probably scripted.
I headed over to youtube and searched for the videos and I was shocked at what I saw.
There was no acting in any of it.

So this is my take on it.

I feel comedians need to have boundaries when cracking jokes. A lot of the time people get insulted and pretend to be happy but deep within they are really sad and boiling.

In Nigeria, a lot of comedians do this a lot and most do not know when they cross the line. Some of them cross it so much and then it becomes an insult.

Jada Pinkett has been struggling with Alopecia for a while now and stuff that pertains to beauty or bodily looks are usually sensitive.

Chris talking about Jada’s alopecia was highly disrespectful and insensitive of him and I feel he was totally wrong and should actually apologize to Jada in public.

If you looked at Jada, you will probably see the pain in her eye after the joke. She was shocked.

My take on will smith’s action
Like Will Smith said yesterday “love will make you do crazy things”
In my opinion, Will should have handled it better. I know a lot of people will say things like he embarrassed you in public and so Chris should also be embarrassed in Public.

I feel he would have done a better job at putting Chris straight without having to raise his hands.

He was obviously going to win the award and so will have the stage to talk to Chris and make him understand how foolish and stupid he was for saying something so sensitive.

I feel he was wrong for physically assaulting Chris.
I think it will only be wise for them to talk it out and render apologies.
The funny part is how he got on stage and still didn’t apologize for hitting Chris.

In the words of Denzel,

Be careful in your highest points cos that’s when the devil works the most.

Well, I guess my 2 cents don’t count...

Thank you for reading.

Sort:

He handled it wrong but humans handle things differently so he handled it the way he could have.

Crazy situation mehn, didn't expect it at all.

I also didn't expect it too.. It was too bad in my opinion.

It overshadowed his win even.

No one expected it.. Chris is sorry he did it, not raising a charge against him.
Will may probably apologize soon.

Let's see how it goes.

Perfectly said mate, couldn’t agree more.

Thank you for stopping by

Indeed!

I don’t want to set official boundaries on what comedians say, I think Dave Chappelle has been helping us face some really difficult issues and considering angles that we never consider. I see him as a kind of healer in that way, but people could easily accuse him of going too far.

It’s more about HOW people make the jokes and with what intention. For some people a roast is a teasing sign of love but if you don’t have that relationship with the person, you better expect it’s gonna hit them the wrong way and people will be angry.

Its important for these kinds of hard hitters to be a bit self depreciating in their humor.

Pushing boundaries can be good or bad, depending on the intentions behind it. Chris’s joke was kind of dumb. And Will looked a little crazy but I think he was just stuck in his last role. Mostly I just don’t like Hollywood lol

But why don't you like Hollywood?

I totally agree that both of them were wrong?

Chris was wrong and Will' a approach was way too wrong.

I just want to see how things unfold later on.

I think people spend too much time paying attention to what’s popular and cool and not enough time building up their own communities and becoming better people. Hollywood is a big drain on our attention. The same can be said about social media but social media is more of a double edge sword, something we can be directly involved in. It’s a huge step up from legacy media outlets and Hollywood. Not saying everything in Hollywood is bad, (I just watched Nomadland and thought it was not bad) but pop culture has more shallow stuff than meaningful or truly amazing stuff and it's so far removed from our lives.

Decentralization is the next step in the process.

That was just some bad anger management in display. Not everyone can take a joke tho, not everything should be joked about. And for the catch line, it was Denze's , I guess he spoke to Will after the incident before he got to speak on the award. His anger got the best of him.

Really bad although maybe pressure also to prove his love for Jada

Pressure or not bro.. he did wrong, but a wrong was done too. Two people were wrong here, and we all act like comedians get a pass to insult anyone in the room. It's wrong.

Like I said Chris was wrong and you have to know what is sensitive as a comedian.

But I think Chris handled it the best way.

For Will, there are more than 10 ways he could have driven the point home without having to raise a finger

That was crazy, I saw the video and I felt embarrassed for Chris. He could have immediately walked away rather than try to pacify the situation with more jokes. As for Will, he wasn't totally right. Two wrongs don't make a right I guess.

He was so wrong.

I think Chris handled it the best way he could have..

I mean he was embarrassed already

I stand by will Smith 100% , in my opinion he clearly handled it right but I stand with him because he was able to show his wife how much he can do to protect her.

I know they had issues way back, with her cheating but this goes a long way to give her more assurance and clear understanding of how far her partner is willing to go for her.

Your opinion is also legit but common there are so many ways to clear somebody without raising a finger.

FGS, You do not have to physically assault someone to show that you love someone.
