"Hush! " Eric said place his right index finger on his lips. Every one kept quiet, Philip could swear his heart was in his ears as the thrumming sound was now louder. Then there was a click at the door and everyone sucked their breaths.
"Surprise!!!" Anita nearly jumped out of he skin as she let a staccato of sounds which was a mixture of a shriek and shout together. Her bag which was hanging on her left arm fell first, followed by the chocolate flavoured peanut butter she usually had with bread.
Philip was grinning now, feeling satisfied with the impression he had created on Anita's face, not just him every other person their from big eared Johnson to skinny Min. It was a bunch that looked like surprise without even having to scream it.
Eric was now helping Anita pick up her fallen groceries, cucumbers rolled under the center table. Anita grabbed the peanut butter first, she wouldn't want Johnson to get his grumpy hands on it. Johnson who was funny for having a double size of everything including his stomach and rhe ears where just peculiar.
Johnson never surprised anyone at birthdays, because he always shows up for the food and never forgets to take some home. Anita clutched the glass can of peanut butter as her eyes met with Johnsons, who immediately moved his focus to the more important thing in her hands.
"Babe, come Eric will get the remaining groceries let's get the party on the way" Philip was sounding more confident now, the tiny ring box still cling occasionally to his thighs reminding him of the real surprise that awaits.
He, moved to the music player and started off with a low blues that made Eric smile, Eric knew it was time and he quickly rushed to drop off the remaining groceries he had gathered from the floor. When he got back Anita was seated on the sofa with a plastic cup in hand, so he took out his phone and nodded to Philip.
"Oh my God" Anita gasped, she cupped her mouth as she looked at Philip who was down on one knee in front of her. She couldn't hear what he was saying although the music was very low, she just kept nodding as trickle of tears rolled from her eyes.
"Is that a yes?" Philip asked, he wasn't really sure she had heard all his lines, as Eric called it. He had memorised everything, a copy of which was crunched in his pockets. When she finally said "Yes" , it was low and with alot of air, so he asked again "Yes?".
"Yes" Anita said, stretching her hands to him and blushing at the chorused "Awwwn" that filled the room.
