A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words (Or, Exactly Fifty): Embracing Life with Five Eyes

What I see: a middle-aged woman wearing glasses and holding a camera. The colors she has on suggest the scene she is in, too -- sparkling green and gold and that strong tree trunk suggest her shirt and solid brown vest, and her white hair recalls the solid light reflecting on what I'm guessing is water in the background. This is someone in tune with a world in color.

What I feel: This is someone who is a great photographer, because she is tune, and because she is comfortable working with glasses and the camera as well -- it takes a real passion and calling to get all that together.

I was called “four eyes” as a child, and did not know it was insulting, because I knew I saw more in the world than others did.
When I was 12, my parents bought me my first “fifth eye,” a camera!
Embracing five eyes can make you a world-famous photographer!

Your '50 words' stories say a lot!

Thank you ... it is said that "brevity is the first grace of style," and although I'mnot a full believer in that, I do try to practice it at least once a week.

It was no expression or scoldimg with us. No one said 4 eye but... Where remarks were made about we're the pair of glasses. One could see a huge difference between the ones for the poor (back then: ziekenfonds verzekerden) and the "rich", middle class who had their own health insurance or not.
Nothing wrong with the 3rd or 5th eye.

Oh ... the frame indicated class level ... that's just as sad in a different way, though ... perhaps even more cruel ... but that would also mean getting that camera, and being recognized for what one saw, would be even more special for those who had to endure such remarks.

Heh, heh, heh, when I was a child they used to call me ‘four eyes’, because since I was one year old I used to wear glasses and during my school days with ‘bottle glasses’, my classmates used to make fun of me... So, when I was 20, I bought my first reflex camera and I completed what you call ‘the fifth eye’...

Wow ... I imagined someone had, and I am glad that you enjoyed the connection to your own life!

I'm so ashamed to say that I was one of those in elementary school who called my classmates who wore glasses "four eyes". I didn't stop to think how it made them feel. Just going along with the crowd.

In middle school, a family member almost lost her eyesight, and another needed glasses. Only then did I realize the effect of insulting those who depended on the glasses for support when seeing family devastated by the hurtful words.

I remember in my mid forties reading a novel, and the words just flew off the page. I became "four eyes", and thanked God for my extra two.

Thanks for sharing this perspective of the image. A thoughtful read. Take care.

Thank you for reading ... I do try to put the commonalities of human life in a light that lets everybody reflect and heal ... it amazes me that people on all sides of this have responded to this post, and EVERYBODY is overcoming from wherever they started!
