Sunset Light - A flash fiction story

"Look," I said. "The sunset is so incredible."

Grandpa looked out to sea. We stood side by side on the verandah of the beach house my family had rented for a week in high summer.

Several quiet moments passed. I was only thirteen at the time, but I had learned that if one could be patient, and listen, Grandpa had things to say.

We watched quietly as the sun dipped down toward the sea and the heavenly pink rays shone in columns of light, illuminating the ocean which was the color of pink lemonade.

"Well," he said at last, "I’ve seen about 32,000 sunsets in my lifetime, and I can confidently say this is the second best one."

I raised my eyebrows and looked at him, even though taking my eyes away from the sea meant I might miss the last moment of the sun and the elusive green flash we had been looking for each evening at sunset. I hadn't ever met anyone who had seen the flash, but it was legendary.

The sun’s glow illuminated Grandpa's face, and I thought about what a wise old owl he was, and how much I loved his wisdom and humor.

"So… I have to know. What sunset was the best?"

He smiled and nodded toward the sea and I returned my gaze to the last pink fingernail of sun.

"It was the night you were born," he said. "You were late by a week and we were all emotionally exhausted. Your mother could barely eat or sleep. But that day you arrived to much jubilation. And when the sun set on that day, signifying that our long wait was over, it shone golden yellow through great towering thunderheads, and every window reflecting its light shimmered like gold. I knew then what a treasure you would be to me."

I put my arm around him, resting my head against his shoulder, as the sun slipped into the sea. Perhaps I wouldn’t have much more time with Grandpa, for he was aging and frail, but I would hold this moment within me forever.

“You are my treasure too, Grandpa," I said.

And that’s when we saw the green flash.

Thank you for reading! I have not participated in a freewrite prompt in far too long. I read the "wise old owl" daily prompt in my car this morning while finishing my coffee, and proceeded to write this story in 5-ish minutes in a Costco parking lot. I guess we never know when we’ll be inspired!

Great play on words/theme in the title and story. I wonder if the green flash at sunset is common knowledge or not. I imagine that you're talking about the natural phenomena seen sometimes. I found this interesting article on it.

What causes the strange green flash at sunset and sunrise on Earth?

Ah, thank you for catching that play on words, @litguru. It was intentional, so I am glad someone noticed.

Very cool article. Thank you for sharing that! I had never read anything that explained the phenomenon before. And darn it all, I have never actually seen the green flash!

Saccharine schmackareen 😅I loved it. You can't take away from the reader experience like that hehe. Such a tender moment shared between loved ones, and delivered flawlessly. 5-ish minutes!! 😱🥰 When inspiration strikes, you have to grab the opportunity firmly with both hands and write - even in a Costco car park! !LUV

Aw, you're such a dear heart, @samsmith1971! I know exactly what you mean about taking away from the reader's experience. Not my intention! I just like stories that are edgy, have something deep within that must be contemplated, and of course a conflict that requires a resolution. That said, I'm really trying to get more words moving and get less stuck on writing things that are profoundly contemplative. So a sweet moment between grandchild and grandfather was today's short creative outburst!

I need to get my words moving again too. And I feel the same way about stories! Although I have a mixed bag, I love writing meaning and depth into the layers. The process itself is enjoyable. It's been too long... sigh

I have discovered the joy of writing in short bursts, then letting the story gestate in my subconscious mind... and my sleeping mine... then go back for another short burst. Most of my stories are written that way. It seems to be the method that works with the level of chaos in my life right now!

Yes!!! I write like this too. A lot!!LOLZ And then suddenly things come together and I write through the night because I can't help myself :-) My stories usually develop over a week. Once in a blue moon, I can do one from start to finish in an evening... but it's rare!

I can see that pink lemonade sea so well now that the air tastes of salt. Hehe!
This micro flash of green fiction is so powerful and so heartwarming that it makes my toes curl.
It’s so weird how we connect so seamlessly with some people, isn’t it? It’s totally amazing if there’s a person out there that “sees” the things we do; especially when it’s “things” that all others will never, ever “see”.

@itsostylish, my friend! Thank you for stopping by and for your lovely comment. I hesitated to post this because it's a bit more saccharine than what I usually write. But I love the idea that some sentiments and truths come out only in quiet moments, when we stop to listen and pay attention.
