The day I met Chase, his first words to me were, “Oh, I love your mane. Can I touch it?” I replied in the affirmative cause from the first look, I was bespelled. He had the most attentive eyes. If wonderment and awe were adjectives, Chase embodied it in the flesh.
He towered over me so I gazed up at him, even as he gazed down at me.
Bewildered and impressed.
Bold and sweet.
My hair was a no-touch zone. But I let Chase. For reasons I didn’t know and probably never will.
Self-same day, he came to my house.
And asked if he could loosen my hair from its long braid.
I let him. I would have let him do anything in that moment.
I was bespelled. Bewitched. Hexed. And that too by my own making.
And so, he took out my braid and ran his fingers through my mane.
I felt a sharp prick on my scalp, but then he soothed it with his hands. And braided my hair back.
So, it became our ritual.
He’d take out my long braids and braid it back again.
Days turned to weeks, turned too months. His obsession with my hair me knew no bounds.
Then, he invited me, for the first time to his house.
And held me lovingly as he showed me into a room.
I stared at the walls, transfixed as chills ran down my spine.
For pinned to those walls were dozens of hair on dozens of….heads.
I realized with a start. It had never been about me. It was the hair. On my head.
I saw Chase's malicious grin in a flash. But nothing prepared me for the blow or the knife that followed.

El día que conocí a Chase, sus primeras palabras fueron: "Me encanta tu melena. ¿Puedo tocarla?" Le respondí afirmativamente porque desde la primera mirada, quedé hechizada. Tenía los ojos más atentos. Si el asombro y la admiración eran adjetivos, Chase los encarnaba en carne y hueso.
Se alzaba sobre mí, así que yo le miraba desde arriba, incluso cuando él me miraba desde abajo.
Desconcertada e impresionada.
Atrevido y dulce.
Mi pelo era una zona de no tocar. Pero se lo permití a Chase. Por razones que no sabía y probablemente nunca sabré.
El mismo día, vino a mi casa.
Y me preguntó si podía soltarme el pelo de su larga trenza.
Se lo permití. Le habría dejado hacer cualquier cosa en ese momento.
Estaba hechizada. Hechizada. Embrujada. Y eso también por mi propia culpa.
Y así, me quitó la trenza y pasó sus dedos por mi melena.
Sentí un pinchazo agudo en el cuero cabelludo, pero luego lo calmó con sus manos. Y me trenzó el pelo hacia atrás.
Así, se convirtió en nuestro ritual.
Me quitaba mis largas trenzas y me las volvía a trenzar.
Los días se convirtieron en semanas, y luego en meses. Su obsesión por mi pelo yo no tenía límites.
Entonces, me invitó, por primera vez a su casa.
Y me abrazó con cariño mientras me enseñaba una habitación.
Me quedé mirando las paredes, paralizada, mientras un escalofrío me recorría la espalda.
En las paredes había decenas de cabellos de decenas de cabezas de.....
Me di cuenta con un sobresalto. Nunca había sido por mí. Era el pelo. En mi cabeza.
Vi las tijeras en un instante. Pero nada me preparó para el cuchillo que siguió.
