Greeting Hive Readers
As we are winding down the tale of Fell Dragon, know that I am slowly working on Fledgling. I'm not going to give away the topic of this story, but once you get to the end of Fell Dragon, it will become apparent why there needs to be a follow-up story.
Anyway, enjoy the Fell Dragon not quite being as gone as Saita would have wanted her gone.
“Oh, calm down, I can’t hurt you anymore.”
The Fell Dragon climbed onto the foot of the bed and sat cross-legged with a grin on her face. It wasn’t that Saita could see the grin in the room but rather felt it.
“You’re dead.” She managed to whisper.
“My body, yes. Thanks, by the way. You knew exactly where to strike to ensure the disks broke. Doran sat with me as I died, was nice of him considering what I had done to you.”
Saita’s mind reeled because despite the Fell Dragon sitting on her feet, she felt nothing. The Dragon grinned at her more broadly and said, “Do you understand?”
She shook her head, terrified of the implications of the Fell Dragon being here. Red-Eye’s ears flicked up and the Fell Dragon turned to look at him.
“Could you tell him that I’m okay?”
Then she understood, she was convinced her mind had finally snapped and couldn’t help the giggle building in her chest.
“You’re not going insane. You just have an aid.”
Saita peered behind the Fell Dragon and said to Red-Eye in a whisper, “Your mistress says she’s okay.”
The Wolven lowered his ears and settled into sleep.
“I thought only the Dekai could have aids.” Said Saita softly as it was clear only she could hear the Fell Dragon.
“Kay. Call me Kay. And no. I wished for this.”
Saita reached for the close by basin to be sick. This was too much. She didn’t need this.
“Ah! The pregnancy.” Said Kay.
“Why stay when you were free? You could have moved on.” Panted Saita.
“It’s not that simple. My body was dead, but my intent was trapped in the cage. I could have been freed, you’re right, but if I left, you would have been trapped in my place.”
“So, I am the next Fell Dragon.”
“You were always going to be, as to whether you’re a Fell Dragon, we’re not sure. You’re more of a Champion with the capabilities of a Fell Dragon. Has Matta not come to you yet?”
“I haven’t seen a Heavenly in some time.”
“True, I did knock you around a bit. You were unconscious.”
“Why are you here?” Saita could feel the tears threatening.
“When I became a Fell Dragon, I had the intent of all the other Fell Dragons forced into me. However, you never had the controller module added to your system. There was no way to integrate you with the cage…”
“You’re not answering my question.” Hissed Saita.
“I’m here to act as a guide.”
“You’re insane.”
“I was but I no longer have the intent or the want that once drove me. That insanity won’t affect you as I am the only one to be your aid.”
“What if I don’t want this?”
“Then you can set me free at any time.”
Saita wanted to jump at the opportunity but stayed her tongue to think about everything she had said. She had said that they weren’t sure if she was a Fell Dragon or not. Who were they?
“I had hoped that Matta had come to see you. I think he may have been told to stay away until you were either fully healed or after the birth of your youngsters.”
“You knew?”
“I consume energy, of course, I knew. I knew for some time. We watched, Red-Eye and I, from the time corridors.”
“What was the purpose of everything?” Demanded Saita as her tears fell. “You took away everything from me.”
She shrugged, “You were a pawn, just like everyone else.”
“Then why bind yourself to me?”
“Because there is a way for the Fell Dragon to become a true balance keeper and I think you’ll be the first of us to achieve it.”
“But I’m you!”
Kay gave a barked laugh and shook her head, “Not even close, Saita. We are vastly different. You’re not a monster.”
Kay looked back to Red-Eye, “If you were, you would have killed him for what I ordered him to do to your family.”
She looked back to Saita, “You will find no companion as loyal as Red-Eye. He clearly doesn’t want to listen to me. I told him he was free to join his Vulpine brethren but here he sits. I couldn’t stand it anymore. It’s why I spoke up at last.”
The grin seemed to change to a smile, “Go to the memorial. Deliver your twins. We will speak again. I am here to guide you, Saita, but if you truly don’t want me here, you tell Matta that. Until then, I will remain silent unless you want guidance.”
The visage disappeared, leaving Saita more horrified than before. Red-Eye opened his working eye and asked softly, “She is at peace?”
Saita set the basin aside and leaned back in her bed, “I don’t know. She should have moved on.”
“She has wanted that for millennia, she tried to obey laws, but wasn’t allowed to live or truly die. She pushed and shaped your reality to ensure the Dragon was no more. Hate her, hate me, but know that there were sacrifices made long before you were created and destroyed. You have life. Live it.”
And it was those words that convinced Saita to go to the memorial. It hadn’t been easy as she had told no one about the Fell Dragon literally inside her head all the time. While she was silent at the moment, Saita knew she was listening to everything happening around the young Queen.
She didn’t know what to do about Kay being in the back of her mind and she was continually stressed about it. However, after several weeks of not hearing from Kay, she put her appearance down to a waking nightmare and buried it deep.
Soon after that, during a routine checkup on her pregnancy, Jarah asked her if she wanted to know the genders of the twins. Still barely able to see the growth in her abdomen, Saita mentally struggled to bond with the lives within her. She was desperate for anything to help her forgive herself for what she had done to them. With the names that Shareik had given her, she was sure that there was a girl and a boy. She hoped it was the case, so she nodded her head.
Jarah showed her the scans and paused at just the right moment to show the genders of her children. She smiled at the prediction being true. She would have considered the names Shareik had given her, but there were too many people she wanted to thank.
“Not a word.” Promised Jarah with a wink, even though Saita hadn’t asked him anything.
“They’re getting big.”
“They are. You should start feeling their kicks soon.”
“I have some questions.”
“I am sure I can answer them for you.”
“How am I getting them out?”
“The same way they got in.” grinned Jarah.
Saita laughed something that no one had heard in months.
“I realise, but are we talking naturally or medical intervention?”
“I wouldn’t be able to tell you at this moment. Usually, twins are a C-section, but if they’re both head-down and there are no other factors that inhibit their natural appearance into the world, I can’t see why you can’t have a natural birth with them. However, you need to realise that your body isn’t the same as anyone else’s. You have a lot of scar tissue, and there is a chance that I will have to add more. We won’t know until you start labour.” The doctor lightly squeezed her leg, “We’ll see as you get closer to your due date. Talking of which will likely be in about three months if we go by human standards of pregnancy.”
“Wouldn’t that make them a month early?”
“Which isn’t unusual for twins. These two are developing far quicker than I anticipated, and pretty soon you’re going to balloon. I want you to lay off the training for a while.”
Saita deflated a little and muttered, “Just when I was starting to feel a little better.”
“You can exercise, in fact, I insist on it, but no more sparing.”
“Fine.”
Just a reminder to those who may have forgotten what Aid's are. They are spirits whose only goal is to guide they one they are bound to. Like Sedeath was bound to Jethron.
