Greetings all
I have finally had some time to dive into my gardening again! I can't wait for the new harvest of cucumbers, even though the seedlings have only just broke the surface of the soil.
Anyway, the first of the two twists get revealed today, so please enjoy.
Saita remembered waking up in hospital after her fight with the Fell Dragon only to be filled with instant regret. Everything had hurt but not as much as knowing she had survived. She had wanted to see Bolx and Aidan again and was prepared to end the curse her life had been destined for. Instead, she had woken to agony and not knowing what was to happen now. She had risked everything, her life, and the pregnancy.
She had discovered the pregnancy soon after Aidan and Bolx had been killed. She had begged Jarah to remain silent but had eventually reached out to Saasha to tell her. Then when the queen and her lover had died moving their plan to capture Red-Eye, Saita knew that anyone who knew about the miracle pregnancy would do the same. She was willing to make the sacrifice, she had to, to ensure that the Fell Dragon fell. She didn’t allow herself to bond with the idea of being a mother again.
However, now that she woke in the hospital in agony, her first thought was that she had not only failed but had destroyed her chance of having a family. She had been so convinced that she had killed her child that she didn’t want to ask Jarah. She had taken the brunt of Siar’s anger, knowing that it was well deserved. Anger she could handle. Relief was a different emotion. When Jarah revealed that not only had her pregnancy survived but there had been two fetuses, the immense feeling of relief was too much for her.
Time was shattered for her for a long time, as she seemed to disappear into catatonia for long stretches of time. Something she must have developed to survive what she had when she was a child and a young adult. It took a long time for her to fight to want to be conscious. Her family, human and Saith, had rallied to her side. This time, they were not going to allow her to risk herself again.
Once she was stronger, she had asked for her family to gather so she could officially tell all of them about the pregnancy. Those who already knew only smiled, those who didn’t, wanted to bombard her with questions, which Jarah had tried to stem, but Saita welcomed them.
The most commonly asked question was when and how it had happened. Saita hadn’t even been sure, even when Jarah gave her a rough calculation of the pregnancy’s development. It had been nothing short of a miracle, as Saita had been convinced there was no way that she would ever be a mother naturally. She had tried to think if it had been a special day or something similar, but she couldn’t recall, and it saddened her.
It took a long time to come to terms with what she had done and heal. She was bedridden for weeks as there was no way to safely walk. She wasn’t willing to risk anything happening to the twins now that everything had come to an end. While Doran had tried to explain what had happened in the cage, none of it made sense to Saita. The only thing she cared about was that the Fell Dragon was gone. However, while she lay in hospital, she couldn’t help but think about her. She wondered what life she had led to becoming the Dragon. Saita was sure that she would never get the answer that she wanted.
The long evenings of healing generally left her bored as Jarah was very strict about her not being overwhelmed. This didn’t stop Siar, Silens, and occasionally Myla from sneaking in after hours to ensure she was comfortable. While Myla and Siar would always sit in a chair close by, watching her sleep, Silens often crawled into bed with her. The old woman was heavily protective over her, despite her not being the only grandmother-to-be.
“You are carrying all that is left of my Bolx.” She would whisper. “Nothing will harm you again.”
But then there were the nights that she couldn’t sleep, and she was left alone for hours. She would stare at the lights of the city almost too scared to touch her stomach, which was yet to show signs of her pregnancy. She had been concerned, especially when she was coming up on their fourth month of development. Jarah had explained, that likely due to the variety of surgeries she had undergone with Sellious, she now had a retroverted uterus, meaning that it was tilted backward, allowing the twins to develop further into her body.
It had been a night that she was alone when Red-Eye had first come to her. At first, she had panicked, but before she could even raise an alarm, the Wolven had raised a single clawed paw.
“Mistress instructed me, and the Saith gave me freedom.” He sank to all fours and walked over to the window to lie down beneath it.
Saita had hyperventilated, enough to cause hospital staff to come running when her vitals had skyrocketed. Once they saw the creature in her room, they were less than enthusiastic in wanting to save her. However, Doran had been summoned. The man had chided the beast for scaring Saita before explaining to her that the creature meant her no harm now that the Fell Dragon was dead.
It had taken a lot for Saita to want the creature close to her, as she strongly suspected that he had killed her family. However, the beast never bothered her and remained in the room at night, vanishing soon after the sun started rising. This would continue for days until Saita no longer felt that her life was in danger.
Treating her injuries was a challenge, as no one was sure how her usual array of medications would affect her offspring. Which made replacing her leg more challenging. Jarah had explained all the types that were available to her and in the end, Saita had decided to go with a design that was similar to her arm. While not nearly as advanced, the prosthetic leg connected to what remained of her lower leg as if it were organic. It had hurt and the physiotherapy had left her in tears most of the time. It didn’t help that she also needed her arm worked on.
She had been walking with support for a few days when Siar had come to her to request that she go to the memorial service Lardan had planned to give. Saita hadn’t wanted to go. She blamed herself for the deaths and wanted to continue hiding. She truly felt that the universe was against her, and while that was true to some extent, those who counted themselves as her allies rallied to her side and protected her from the worst of it.
Saita couldn’t bear to go and take responsibility for the death of the queen and her partner. Siar had tried to make her see that she was the only one who saw it that way, but the young human queen had refused at first, and then later promised to think on it.
It was a few nights before the memorial Saita had had a bad night. She couldn’t sleep and was fighting waves of nausea Jarah had associated with morning sickness. Her body was fighting her pregnancy, and she was trying to ensure that nothing would happen to the pair. She had closed her eyes for a few minutes to try and centre herself. She heard Red-Eye padding into the room and lying in his usual spot and she tried to ignore him.
“The handmaidens should have you on a drip for dehydration.”
Her eyes snapped open, and she found it wasn’t just Red-Eye in her room. At the foot of her bed stood a person she had come to recognise from mirrors and her nightmares.
And the Fell Dragon is back.
