Greetings all
Another short update with a twist!
Lying still, the Wolven tilted his head to look at the one sitting next to him. It looked like Saita, and it smelled like her too, but she wasn’t her. Instead of getting aggressive, Red-Eye took a deep breath. The usual smells he had come to know as Saita wasn’t there. There was no smell of the babies, no smell of milk, and no smell of Bolx.
“Mistress?” he queried.
“It’s been a while, Red-Eye.” She said softly.
Her voice was the same, but it seemed to hold so much regret now. She couldn’t look at him. He wasn’t sure why at first until another smell caught his attention. She smelled of the time corridors. Shock rippled through his system, and he almost scrambled to his feet. Was this Saita or his previous mistress. He was confused and fear was starting to grow in his belly.
“I need your help, Red-Eye.” She said.
He opened his mouth to say something but stopped. There were other scents now. Now he stood up and looked behind him. There was a sullen man with short grey hair with a large Vulpine. Red-Eye was sure this was a Vulpine, but its scent made him second guess himself.
“That’s Fledge and Rubar. They helped me find you.”
“Rubar? That was my father’s name. He is Wolven?”
“Vulpine with Wolven blood.” Said Rubar before he was elbowed by Fledge.
“Mistress?”
“Saita, Red-Eye. How many times do I need to tell you to call me Saita?”
Red-Eye sat down next to Saita, knowing now who she was and where she had come from. He looked up toward the castle and the pieces started to fall into place. This was why Aidan and Bolx were able to come back. He had helped but only because Saita had come to ask for his help.
She hadn’t abandoned him. She thought of him still. He turned to look at the strangers before letting his gaze fall upon his mistress. She was trembling and he smelled the wave of longing on her scent.
A lot of time had passed for this one. In the castle beyond, her family still existed. She wanted to see them again but couldn’t. How much time had passed? Was she alone now? But she looked so young. Did something happen?
“Who are you?” he asked.
She sighed and seemed to struggle to find the right words.
“I’m me, just closer to being 250.”
Red-Eye understood. His mistress had been thousands of years old, her age halted by the machine within her and the cage. He had just never thought that Saita would be as affected. Her age would explain her longing. Everyone within the castle was long dead. She had no one.
“I need to know how you travelled through time and dimensions to get to Bolx and Aidan. I need to bring them back.”
“You have Rubar, he should be able to…”
“Aidan travelled because of what you did. He copied you. I need you to show me.”
Red-Eye raised a paw and made to cut through the space between him and Saita, but nothing happened.
“I can’t anymore, Saita. There is no Fell Dragon, I cannot power my abilities anymore. What power I had left on the death of my mistress is long gone.”
Saita then looked to Fledge and Rubar, knowing that the only reason they could travel the way they did was because of the Fledgling Dragons. She cursed herself. All of this was on her.
“But if you take me to a time where I do have access to a Fell Dragon, then I can show you.” Said the Wolven.
Saita sensed Fledge’s agitation. He had clearly thought this would be an easy mission, but it had gotten more complicated.
“Any Fell Dragon?” He asked.
Red-Eye shook his head, “I need mistress’s power. Or the one before her. Those were the ones I was aligned with. I could use their power to do what you wish of me.”
“Saita, this is getting overly complicated and runs the risk of destroying your own timeline!” exclaimed Fledge.
“I have to help them get back. I can’t see any other way.” She looked at the castle once more. “My life playing out the way it was supposed to depend on it.”
“Well, maybe it doesn’t need to play out the way that it should of.” Snapped the impatient Fledgling.
“You weren’t there.” Whispered Red-Eye. “When the twins came.”
Fledge glared at the Wolven.
“Saita had all but given up. The twins were stubborn, and she had nothing left. If Bolx hadn’t walked into that room…” Red-Eye trailed off.
“Are you saying that if we don’t get the boy and Saith back Saita and the twins will die.”
Red-Eye stood his full height, dwarfing Rubar and Fledge, and simply said, “Yes.”
Fledge rolled his eyes, “Bullshit.”
“Do you really want to risk that?” asked Rubar. “Too much rides on this going the way that it must. We need to help them.”
How much longer can Saita fool around with her time before something terrible happens?
