Hi Readers
Still on holiday, please enjoy this update.
“We were never going to know who the father of Aidan was. No matter how much everyone wanted to know. I certainly didn’t and neither of the twins could stomach the idea, not after everything. After you left here, I started reflecting. I wanted to be more. I couldn’t blame anyone for what happened, and it wasn’t my son’s fault he existed. Through a lot of therapy and more drunken nights than I’m willing to admit to, I started making headway. It took a while, but Aidan and I could eventually stomach being in the same room as each other. It’s all he ever wanted, for me to acknowledge his existence. He didn’t care if I hated him, he just wanted to be acknowledged by the woman forced to bear him. I needed to learn that he wasn’t the problem, just the result. It took a long time, longer than it should of and I wasn’t fair to him. He had endless patience for me, Jarah raised a good boy.”
“And?”
The queen paused as several servants brought in the tea and various foods. They were arranged on the side tables that sat next to the chairs that each woman occupied. The servants poured tea for them and then left the room. Once the door clicked shut behind them, Queen Kay continued with her story.
“I won’t say we have a conventional mother-son relationship, but it’s better than it was in the past. I don’t denounce him, and he is the crowned prince. It’s a continual thing to help both of us heal from what was done to me. I ignored him in his more vulnerable years, and he doesn’t need me like a child normally would their mother. He is a good man and a wonderful brother to his sister; I can’t wish for anything more than that.”
“So, you and the twins?”
The queen grinned and said, “Oh no, you don’t get to have all the fun. A question for a question.”
Saita was sure that the queen could feel the panic that was growing within her. Saita had been trying to control it and was failing. She knew that she needed to find Fledge, Rubar, and Red-Eye, but she had no feasible way to do that. All she could do for now was talk and keep her mind occupied. And truth be told, she had always wanted to see this version of her again.
“That’s fair. Not like I can do much right now. I’m stuck.”
“That, explain that. I must say, I have always been curious how you developed after leaving here.”
Saita took the time to explain how she had gotten back here and what her goals had been. When Kay heard her speak Aidan’s name, Saita couldn’t help but feel Kay’s anger, so she quickly added.
“He was born from another. While there wasn’t permission for his creation, it wasn’t like anything you went through.”
The queen relaxed a little but not by much. “To answer your earlier question. Once I stopped losing myself in destructive behaviours, I came to realise I was lonely.”
She wrapped her arms over her belly as a faint blush developed along the top of her cheeks. Saita knew what it was like to be lonely. She had had no true companionship in the last 100 years, and it hurt.
“I made peace with Aidan but never his fathers. It was difficult as they were surrounded by so many good and terrible memories. Memories where I fought, memories when I gave up, and memories of them trying to make peace. I hated them, I loathed them, but I loved them. I learned to work through the memories, making peace with what I couldn’t change but there was this nagging feeling that just wouldn’t go away. Did I love them or was that a survival mechanism my body underwent? I didn’t know, no one knew. I tried to pull back, tried to hide what I felt. It was better to be lonely than to allow what was done to me again. I couldn’t picture being with anyone, not like that, not again. I didn’t know better, and my doctors tried to help but I wouldn’t listen.”
“Something must have changed.”
The queen mimicked drinking, “Remember when I said I had too many drunken nights? It helped with the pain and drowned out the memories. I don’t recommend it. While it did what I needed it to do, it also made me stupid, rash, and impulsive. That combined with the severe loneliness and frankly the need to feel loved in some capacity made me seek the twins out.”
“Both of them!” exclaimed Saita before she could stop herself.
“It was all I knew.” Defended the queen, her face blood red.
Well this is an interesting development.
