Fledgling: Part 26

Greetings Readers

Work is now back in full swing and I have a massive project to start the year off. I am looking forward to it, as it's a topic I have explored many times, and look forward to writing about it!

Fledgling has fallen a little to the sidelines with my mother being here and I think I have only written about a page in the last week! At least I built up a buffer, so you guys won't miss out!

Please enjoy today's update!

The Fell Dragon and her companion Red-Eye were the first to arrive but soon after them, the packs of crazed Wolven joined. These creatures tore into the populace but didn’t seem to be under her direct control.

She had been with her mother and older brother when they were attacked by Red-Eye. It was as if he knew exactly who he was looking for. He had quickly dispatched her mother and brother and was about to turn on her when her father had teleported her away at the cost of his own life.

Refusing to allow the Wolven the satisfaction of taking her family from her, she had tried to make her way back to the battlefield when her brother had found her. He had begged her to fall back but instead, she had rallied him to her side to avenge their family. He never could say no to her.

They had cut through multiple packs trying to get back to the castle, but instead, they were waylaid by their mother. In her exhaustion, Maxine didn’t notice all the differences and instead wrapped her arms around the woman who stood before her and cried. Her brother, however, did notice the differences and tried to get her to stand back.

“I’m not who you think I am.”

Maxine hadn’t heard her mother’s voice since she was very young, and she immediately released the woman she had been embracing. It was her mother, but the right side of her face was heavily scarred and only a grey eye looked back at them. The skin on her arms was heavily tattooed, just like their mother’s but the patterns were different.

“Who are you?” demanded Martin.

“I don’t have time to explain.” Said the woman as she looked behind her. “The Fell Dragon is close, and we cannot meet yet. I need your help.”

“Why should we help you?” Martin’s anger was almost palpable.

However, Maxine felt nothing. She had seen everyone she loved besides her twin brother be cut down. There was nothing left and soon the Fell Dragon would descend on them and then they too would be gone.

Fury erupted in her chest, and she flew at the woman who resembled their mother, and that was the last thing she remembered before waking in the snow. She was looking up at a steely sky and her brother looking down at her.

“You good? We lost you for a while there.”

Her head had ached as she sat up, “We?”

Martin indicated where the strange woman was standing. Instead of talking this time, she started signing. Her signs were carried out the same way their mother signed. Maxine knew immediately that the only reason this strange woman was signing was because she and her brother were more comfortable with it.

“What is going on?” Maxine ignored the woman and turned to her brother.

“She’s trying to tell you, but you aren’t watching.”

“That’s not our mother!”

“I never claimed to be.”

Again, the voice tore into Maxine. She glared at the woman. The woman became uncomfortable and looked away. Martin lifted her from the snow and said, “You need to listen. She saved us, Maxine.”

“Why!” she screamed at the woman.

“For a selfish reason. Well, two selfish reasons.” Admitted the woman.

“Who are you?” demanded Maxine.

“Don’t be an idiot.” Snapped Martin. “It’s clearly Mother.”

The woman smiled sadly and said, “Martin, we’ve been over this.”

“I know, but still.”

The woman sat down on a fallen tree, looked from brother to sister, and said, “My name is Saita Karesh. My birth name was Samantha Kay Kaidan. I don’t know if your mother shared my names or not.”

She then sighed heavily and continued.

“Look, I need your help.”

“So, you said.” Interrupted Maxine.

“Maxine, please listen.”

“How do you know my name? Did you tell her?” she demanded of her brother.
Martin raised his hands in his defence, but Saita continued, “You’re my simultaneously existing and not existing twins.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” snapped Maxine.

“She’s a time traveller.” Said Martin.

“If that is so, why didn’t you save my family?”

She almost felt bad when she saw the look of pain that crossed the woman’s face.

“I only had so much time, and I was already cutting it close by coming for you.” She then looked at Martin. “Thank you for getting to Brucel when you did with the warning of who the Fell Dragon was. It played a role in my past far more than I understood at the time.”

“Did you manage to get to him?”

“I did, but only because you drew the Fell Dragon away long enough.” Saita smiled sadly. “We always wondered how he managed to get to my time. I guess I have my answer now.”

Maxine was pulled from her memories when a heavy coat was thrown over her shoulders. She looked up as her brother knelt in the snow next to her. He viewed her with his usual look of pity before gripping the sides of her face to make her look at him.

“There was nothing more you could have done. She did what she could.”

“She left us here.”

“I know.”

“Why save us and then leave us here?”

Martin sighed softly, “She said it was for selfish reasons, but were they really? We live, sister. We have a chance to still live our lives.”

“Why should we help her? Why should she get the life that is denied to us!”

Martin embraced his sister and whispered, “Because she could have left us to die. She didn’t need to save us, but she did.”

“But this isn’t our time, our universe…”

“But we live, and we can live well sister. Please, come back inside. Our brother and father need us.”

“They aren’t our father or brother…”

“For now, they are. Once time flows the way it should, we will lose them, but for now, let’s enjoy their presence while we can.”
