Fledgling: Part 5

Greetings all

While I would love to say I did multiple pages in Fledgling, I have not. Play Dragon Age for releasing a new game on my birthday. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Anyway, here's today's update. I hope you all enjoy it!

Bolx didn’t hesitate. He scooped Aidan up and made his way to where he saw some trees. It wasn’t much shelter, but it was enough to find shelter from the biting wind. Aidan immediately felt his pockets and sighed in relief that the piece of paper that Matta had given him was still there. He knew it wouldn’t help them now, but it would in the future.

“I can walk myself.” He insisted.

Bolx put him down, rather than trying to fight with him. He didn’t have the energy to. He needed to find them shelter, at least enough to give him time to look over their wounds. He had yet to feel pain from the adrenaline that had flooded his system, but he was well aware of the bloody mess that had been in his right arm. He needed to deal with it now.

Aidan wasn’t shocked when Bolx gathered energy in his free left hand and concentrated it until it was burning white. He knew what was to come next, and he turned away. The sound and smell of cooking meat made his head swim, but he refused to be sick. He needed to follow orders and keep calm, there were more wounds that needed to be dealt with.

By the time they reached the thick overgrowth, the wind had died back, and it wasn’t as cold. There was less snow, and a few rocky outcrops already gave Aidan an idea for a temporary shelter. He turned to look up at Bolx. The Saith was unsteady on his feet and was the same colour as the snow. Aidan knew that a body could only lose so much blood before a person passed out. He looked around him and saw nothing that could help them stem the blood flow. He saw blood coated the Saith’s upper body, and blood was dripping from his remaining fingers. That was all he noticed before Bolx collapsed. That was the first time Aidan felt panic.

“No!” he exclaimed and tried to roll Bolx over.

The Saith grunted, but his eyes didn’t open.

“Bolx, I can’t do this alone. I need help.”

Aidan was terrified that the Saith was unconscious, but Bolx slowly opened his one eye.

“Shelter.” He muttered as he tried to get up.

Aidan helped him sit up.

“You remember your training?” the man asked.

Aidan nodded his head.

“I am of no help like this. Need rest. I know some of the plants.” Bolx’s eyes lost their focus, and he shook his head to bring his attention back.

“Shelter, fire, water, food.” Said Aidan as he looked around.

“Help me to those rocks.” Said Bolx.

Aidan did so, and once he set Bolx’s back against the one, he understood what the Saith was trying to do.

“This is going to hurt.” Bolx covered his hand with the white-hot energy once more and seared the flesh across Aidan’s chest and arms.

Aidan wasn’t prepared for the pain and nearly toppled. A powerful tap to his face kept him awake. While Bolx hadn’t wanted to do that, he needed the mobile child if they were going to survive.

“I will clear the snow in this small area, you get fuel, as dry as possible. Anything dead and standing, take nothing from the ground. The more you move, the less the pain will play on your mind. Understood?”

Aidan nodded his head and moved quickly, trying to fight the pain and keep himself warm. He couldn’t understand how Bolx was keeping everything together. He knew he had been a fighter and soldier for most of his life, but did that explain how he was keeping everything together now?

Behind him, he could hear the Saith cry out in pain as he started sealing all his own wounds. Aidan knew this was a temporary fix and understood that if they didn’t get medical attention, they were going to succumb to infection from the Wolven claws.

He shouldn’t have let those thoughts distract him because when he looked up, he was face-to-face with two individuals. Both were tall, dressed in winter gear and were staring him down. He must have looked a mess to the two of them. He noted one turn to the other and spoke in a low voice, but he caught a few words, enough to know that they were speaking Saith.

Before he could say anything, the one broke away while the other held its hands up. The hands then grabbed the edges of its hood and pulled it back. A dark-haired individual, a young man, looked down at him with a smile.

“She was right, you’re easily recognisable. Aidan, right?”

Everything in Aidan screamed at him to get away from this individual, but his body was frozen in place. Aidan didn’t know where the other one had disappeared off to, and a pit formed in his stomach.

Bolx!

“The old man is fine. You don’t need to worry about him, my sister will take care of him. We’ve been waiting for some time for the two of you to join us. We were worried that we had perhaps mixed up the date or location. I’m glad that we found you still in one piece.” The man grinned painfully. “Well, mostly in one piece.”

Aidan had been standing for too long in the cold, not moving. His limbs felt leaden, and his mind was fading rapidly. He felt his need to panic melt away as the stranger before he looked at him in concern.

“Aidan? Aidan, are you…”

That was the last thing the boy heard as his mind fled into the darkness.

And who may these new people be?
